Modavinil vs Modalert: Same 200 mg Modafinil, Different Backstory

· · Fact-checked October 2026 · How we review

Modavinil versus Modalert comparison
Both 200 mg modafinil; details from labels and Afinil listings checked October 29, 2026

Modavinil vs Modalert is a comparison more people are making because of one line at the top of Afinil's Modalert page: a warning that Sun Pharma may soon stop Modalert leaving India. Afinil's suggested replacements include Centurion's Modavinil. So is the newer brand a fair swap for the most famous modafinil generic, or is it a step down?

We haven't tested either product. What follows comes from the US prescribing information for Provigil (modafinil), Afinil's product pages for both brands checked on October 29, 2026, and the limits of what anyone can honestly say about generics like these. It's general information, not medical advice. We earn a commission if you buy through our Afinil links, at no extra cost to you.

The short answer

  • Same drug, same dose. Both tablets contain 200 mg of modafinil, the active ingredient in Provigil.
  • Same price at Afinil. Both used an identical price ladder when we checked, from $3.99 down to $1.09 a tablet.
  • Different track records. Modalert has years of user reports behind it. Modavinil is new and has very few.
  • Different supply outlook. Afinil warns Modalert may become unavailable. Modavinil is what it suggests instead.
  • Same rules. In the US, both need a prescription, and neither is an FDA-approved product.

If you value proven history most, Modalert is still the reference brand while it lasts. If you want a brand that's likely to stay on the shelf and come with a matching armodafinil, Modavinil is the more practical pick.

Why the drug inside is the same

Modafinil is modafinil. Any 200 mg tablet that contains what its label says should deliver the same amount of the active drug. The Provigil label describes how it behaves: it reaches peak blood levels about two to four hours after a dose, and its effective half-life after repeated dosing is about 15 hours. Food can delay the peak by about an hour but doesn't change the total amount absorbed.

That's the science that applies to both brands. Neither Centurion nor Sun Pharma can change how modafinil works in the body. What a maker controls is the rest of the tablet: the binders and fillers, how evenly the drug is mixed, how fast the tablet breaks apart, and how carefully each batch is checked.

Those things matter, but they're hard to judge from the outside. Neither brand is sold in the US as an approved generic, so neither has been through the FDA's bioequivalence review, the testing that shows a generic matches the brand in the bloodstream. That's true of every Indian modafinil brand sold online, not just these two.

The makers

Sun Pharma (Modalert)

Sun Pharma is one of the largest drug companies in India and sells medicines in many countries, including the US, where it markets FDA-approved products. Modalert itself is made for markets outside the US. Its reputation among modafinil users comes from sheer volume: it has been the default "Indian modafinil" for a long time, so there are years of forum posts, reviews and comparisons to draw on.

Centurion Laboratories (Modavinil)

Centurion Laboratories is a smaller Indian manufacturer. Afinil lists it as the maker of Modavinil and of Armodavinil, its armodafinil partner. There's far less public information about Centurion, and far less user history for Modavinil. That doesn't mean the tablets are worse. It means there's less evidence either way.

For more on Modavinil on its own, see our Modavinil 200 mg review. For Modalert, see our guide on where to buy Modalert.

Price: identical at Afinil

When we checked both product pages on October 29, 2026, Afinil showed the same ladder for each:

PackPer tabletApprox. pack price
10 tablets$3.99$39.90
20 tablets$3.49$69.80
30 tablets$2.99$89.70
50 tablets$2.39$119.50
100 tablets$1.99$199
200 tablets$1.69$338
300 tablets$1.66$498
500 tablets$1.59$795
1,000 tablets$1.09$1,090

Pack prices are simple multiplication, so check the cart for the real figure. Afinil said paying in crypto takes 24% off, and the Modavinil page mentioned free standard shipping from $130. US domestic shipping had "special pricing" and was free over $350. Our bitcoin payment guide explains the crypto discount.

Because the price is the same, cost shouldn't decide this comparison. If price is your main concern, a cheaper option is looking at other brands entirely. Our modafinil 200 mg price guide compares them.

The Modalert supply notice

Afinil's Modalert page opens with a warning. It says that within a few months Modalert and Waklert will no longer be available, because Sun Pharma will stop allowing their export from India due to legal issues. It then points buyers to ModaXL and ArmodaXL, while still selling Modalert. The Modavinil page repeats the idea and calls Modavinil and Armodavinil the best replacements for Modalert and Waklert.

Two cautions. First, there's no date in either notice, and we couldn't find independent confirmation of an export stop. Second, the store benefits if you move to brands it promotes, so treat the notice as a heads-up, not a fact.

The practical takeaway: don't panic-buy a 1,000-tablet pack of Modalert because of a warning banner. Medicine expires, and large orders bring more risk at customs. If Modalert does disappear, other 200 mg modafinil brands contain the same drug.

Track record: why history matters

The best argument for Modalert is the amount of real-world experience behind it. When thousands of people have used a brand for years, problems such as weak batches, inconsistent tablets or packaging changes tend to get noticed and discussed. That gives new buyers some reassurance, even though forum reports aren't proper testing.

Modavinil doesn't have that yet. Afinil showed six reviews on its page, compared with 14 for Modalert, and store-hosted reviews are a weak signal anyway. Elsewhere, reports on Modavinil are sparse. If you're the cautious type, that's a fair reason to prefer Modalert, or another long-running brand such as Modvigil. Our Modvigil vs Modalert comparison covers that option.

Effects and side effects: no real difference

Since both tablets are 200 mg modafinil, expect the same effects and the same side effects. The Provigil label lists headache as the most common side effect in trials, followed by nausea, nervousness, a runny nose, back pain, diarrhea, anxiety, insomnia and dizziness.

The label also lists rare but serious problems for modafinil itself, whichever brand you buy:

  • Serious skin reactions, including rashes that need urgent care.
  • Allergic reactions such as swelling of the face, lips or throat.
  • Psychiatric symptoms, including anxiety, mania, hallucinations or suicidal thoughts.
  • Chest pain or heart rhythm problems, especially in people with heart disease.

Modafinil can also make hormonal birth control less effective, during use and for a month afterward, according to the label. Tell your prescriber about every medicine you take. See our medical disclaimer for more.

If one brand seems to work better for you than the other, look at the boring causes first: how much you slept, what time you took it, whether you ate a heavy meal, and whether the pack is in date.

Dosing and timing

The label dose is the same for both: 200 mg once a day. For narcolepsy and sleep apnea, it's taken in the morning. For shift work disorder, it's taken about an hour before the shift starts. The label notes that doses up to 400 mg a day haven't shown consistent extra benefit over 200 mg.

Because the half-life is long, taking either tablet late in the day can ruin your sleep. Our guide to the best time to take Provigil applies to both brands.

Pairing with armodafinil

Some people like buying modafinil and armodafinil from the same maker. Here the brands go different ways:

If you want a pairing you can expect to keep reordering, the Centurion pair looks safer on supply, based on Afinil's own notices.

How to compare them fairly yourself

If you have a prescription and want to see whether one brand suits you better, a careful comparison beats guessing:

  1. Start small. Use a 10-tablet pack of each rather than a big order.
  2. Keep everything else the same. Same dose, same time of day, similar sleep the night before.
  3. Keep a short diary. Note sleep, timing, how alert you felt and any side effects.
  4. Leave gaps. Don't take both on the same day or stack doses.
  5. Check the packs. Look at the batch number, expiry date and that the strip says 200 mg.
  6. Tell your prescriber what you're comparing and what you noticed.

Questions to settle before you pick a brand

Checking what arrives

Whichever you pick, inspect the parcel. The blister strip should show the brand, strength, maker, batch number and expiry date. Tablets should look uniform, with no crumbling or discoloration. If something looks wrong, don't take it. Contact the store and keep the packaging. Afinil advertises a reship policy for lost parcels and a 30-day guarantee; our explainer on Afinil's reshipment policy covers the current terms, and our review asks whether Afinil is a legit vendor.

US legal reality

In the US, modafinil is a Schedule IV controlled substance. It needs a valid prescription, and a Schedule IV prescription can be refilled at most five times within six months. Neither Modavinil nor Modalert is an FDA-approved product, and importing either without a prescription isn't a legal route. Afinil labels them "OTC", but a store's label doesn't change US law, and customs can seize parcels.

Afinil also offers a domestic USPS option for some products, such as ModaXL, that ships from inside the US. That changes the shipping route, not the legal status. Our domestic USPS shipping review and our guide to whether buying modafinil is legal explain the details. If you don't have a prescription yet, see getting a modafinil prescription from an online doctor.

Who should pick which

Modalert suits you if:

  • You want the brand with the longest track record.
  • You've used it before and it worked well.
  • You're buying a small amount and aren't worried about future supply.

Modavinil suits you if:

  • You want a 200 mg modafinil that Afinil expects to keep stocking.
  • You'd like a matching armodafinil (Armodavinil) from the same maker.
  • You're comfortable starting with a small pack of a newer brand.

Consider another brand if:

  • You're in the US and want domestic shipping. Our ModaXL vs Modalert comparison covers Afinil's house brand.
  • You'd rather go with a long-running alternative to Modalert, such as Modvigil.

Storage and shelf life

Both brands come in foil blister strips, which protect the tablets well if you leave them sealed until you need them. The Provigil label says to store modafinil at room temperature, around 20 to 25°C (68 to 77°F). Keep the strips away from bathroom humidity and hot cars, and out of reach of children and pets.

Check the expiry date as soon as a parcel arrives, especially on larger packs. If you'll only take a few tablets a week, a 100-tablet pack could sit in a drawer for a long time, and a cheaper per-tablet price isn't a saving if half the pack expires unused. Our guide on whether modafinil expires covers what an expired tablet means in practice.

A quick cost-per-month example

This is an illustration only, not dosing advice. At one 200 mg tablet a day, a 30-day supply bought as a 30-tablet pack would come to about $89.70 for either brand at Afinil's October 29, 2026 prices. Bought as part of a 100-tablet pack, the same 30 days works out to about $59.70. Because the ladders match, the monthly cost is the same whichever brand you choose. Only the pack size changes it.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting a different drug. A new brand name doesn't mean a new effect. It's still modafinil.
  • Doubling up. If one brand feels weaker, taking two tablets isn't the fix. Talk to your prescriber.
  • Bulk-buying on a rumour. A supply warning isn't a reason to order a year's worth.
  • Judging after one day. One bad night's sleep can make any tablet seem weak.
  • Ignoring the law. In the US, both brands need a prescription.

Verdict

Modavinil vs Modalert comes down to history versus availability, not strength or price. Both are 200 mg modafinil, and at Afinil both cost the same per tablet. Modalert has the far bigger track record, but its own store page warns it may disappear. Modavinil is newer and less proven, but it's the brand Afinil is lining up to replace it, with a matching armodafinil. If you have a prescription and want to try Modavinil, start with a small pack and compare carefully.

FAQ

Is Modavinil the same as Modalert?

They contain the same active drug, modafinil, at the same 200 mg strength, so they're meant to work the same way. The makers, fillers and tablet manufacturing differ. Modavinil comes from Centurion Laboratories and Modalert from Sun Pharma, according to Afinil.

Which is stronger, Modavinil or Modalert?

On paper, neither. Both are 200 mg modafinil. Reports that one "hits harder" usually come down to sleep, timing, food, expectations or batch differences, and there's no head-to-head study of the two brands.

Is Modavinil a good replacement for Modalert?

Afinil promotes it as one. Because it contains the same drug at the same dose, it's a reasonable like-for-like swap, but it has far less user history, so start with a small pack and see how it suits you.

Is Modalert being discontinued?

Afinil's Modalert page, checked October 29, 2026, says Sun Pharma will stop allowing Modalert and Waklert to be exported from India within a few months, citing legal issues. It gives no date, and we haven't found independent confirmation.

Which is cheaper, Modavinil or Modalert?

At Afinil they were identical when we checked on October 29, 2026: $3.99 a tablet for 10, $1.99 for 100 and $1.09 for 1,000. Paying with crypto took 24% off either brand.

Can I switch from Modalert to Modavinil?

Talk to your prescriber first. The dose is the same, so a switch doesn't normally need a change, but your prescriber should know which product you're taking and why.

Do Modavinil and Modalert have the same side effects?

Yes. Both are modafinil, so the label side effects apply to both: headache most often, then nausea, nervousness, a runny nose, back pain, diarrhea, anxiety, insomnia and dizziness. Rare serious reactions include severe rash.

Is it legal to buy Modavinil or Modalert in the US?

Modafinil is a Schedule IV controlled substance in the US and needs a valid prescription. Neither brand is FDA-approved, and importing either without a prescription isn't a legal route, whatever a store's "OTC" label says.
