Is Afinil a Legit Modafinil Vendor? The Honest Answer
Alright, let's do this properly. You've seen Afinil pop up when you searched for cheap modafinil, maybe you got an ad, maybe a friend mentioned it, and now you want to know one thing: are these guys legit, or are you about to send money into the void? We dug through their policies, product pages, shipping rules and what other people say about them online, and this is everything we'd tell a buddy before he placed an order.
Short version: Afinil looks like a real, functioning online vendor that does ship product and has unusually clear reship and refund rules. It is not a licensed pharmacy in your country, it sells prescription drugs without a prescription, and there's an unresolved online claim that it's run by the same people as another big vendor. All of that matters. Let's unpack it piece by piece.
What Afinil actually is
Afinil.com is an online store that sells generic modafinil and armodafinil brands made in India, plus a few other products we're not going to talk about here. It's what people in the nootropic world call a "vendor": not a pharmacy you walk into, not a telehealth clinic, but a website that sources Indian generics and mails them to customers around the world.
The core range is the stuff people come for: its own house brand ModaXL (modafinil) and ArmodaXL (armodafinil), plus well-known Indian generics like Modalert, Modvigil, Waklert, Artvigil and Modafil MD. It also sells combo packs and free trial samples.
What it is not: a licensed US pharmacy, and its tablets aren't FDA-approved. It doesn't ask for a prescription. That's a big deal, and we'll come back to it in the legal section, because "the vendor is legit" and "buying from the vendor is legal where you live" are two totally different questions.
Where the pills come from
According to Afinil's own product pages, the brands come from established Indian manufacturers:
| Brand | Active ingredient | Manufacturer (per Afinil) |
|---|---|---|
| ModaXL | Modafinil | HOF Pharmaceuticals |
| ArmodaXL | Armodafinil | HOF Pharmaceuticals |
| Modvigil | Modafinil | HAB Pharma |
| Artvigil | Armodafinil | HAB Pharma |
| Modalert | Modafinil | Sun Pharma |
| Waklert | Armodafinil | Sun Pharma |
| Modavinil / Armodavinil | Modafinil / Armodafinil | Centurion Laboratories |
Sun Pharma is one of the largest drugmakers in India and HAB Pharma is the name behind two of the most-reviewed generics on the market, so those brands at least have a long track record with buyers. HOF Pharmaceuticals is less famous; Afinil describes it as operating in WHO-GMP facilities, but we couldn't independently verify that claim from a regulator, so treat it as the vendor's word.
The orders themselves ship from Singapore or India, according to Afinil's shipping page, with some US orders shipping domestically inside the US via USPS (more on that below).
The trust signals that look good
Here's what pushed us toward "this is a real operation":
- A written reship and refund policy. If your order doesn't arrive within 30 days, or you're unhappy with it, Afinil says you can choose a refund or a reshipment. If an order is stopped for more than 15 business days, it says it'll send a free reshipment. That's specific, and specific policies are harder to weasel out of.
- Free samples. New customers can order free modafinil or armodafinil samples. A scam shop has no reason to mail you free pills.
- Tracking. Afinil says you get a tracking number by email within roughly 48 hours of dispatch (its shipping page also says 24 to 72 hours for EMS).
- A store credit wallet that never expires. If they can't refund you in cash, they put store credit in your account. Not ideal if you wanted cash, but it's a documented process.
- Named manufacturers and brands that exist in the real world. These aren't made-up pill names.
The things that should make you careful
And here's the stuff we'd want you to know before you hand over a card number:
- It sells prescription-only drugs without a prescription. In the US modafinil is a Schedule IV controlled substance. Importing it without a prescription isn't legal, and customs can seize packages.
- Card charges show another merchant name. Afinil says card payments go through processors located in China and Europe, and your statement may show a different name, with up to about 5% in exchange fees. That's common with these shops, but it's also a pattern that makes chargebacks and disputes messier.
- It pushes Bitcoin hard. It advertises a big discount for paying in Bitcoin. Crypto payments are basically irreversible. If something goes wrong, you're relying entirely on the vendor's goodwill.
- The ModafinilXL claim. On Reddit's r/Scam_vendors there's a post calling Afinil "a scam by modafinilxl with another name." We couldn't confirm or disprove that. Plenty of vendors in this space share owners or suppliers, and shared ownership doesn't make the pills fake. But it does mean "independent reviews" of these brands are worth reading skeptically, including ours. We earn a commission if you buy, and we say so up front.
- Its own site is heavy on self-praise. Afinil's shipping page literally says Google ranks it as an excellent e-pharmacy. That's marketing, not a regulator's seal.
So, is Afinil legit?
If by "legit" you mean "will I probably receive the product I paid for," the evidence points to yes. The policies are detailed, the samples are real, and the brands are established Indian generics.
If by "legit" you mean "is this a licensed, regulated pharmacy and is it legal for me to buy from," the answer is no. It's a grey-market vendor. That doesn't make it a scam, but it does mean you have none of the protections you'd have with your local pharmacy, and you might be breaking the law depending on where you live.
How shipping works, in plain English
Afinil lists two main international methods: Express Mail Service (EMS) and Registered Airmail.
| Method | Time to the US | Cost (per Afinil) | Signature |
|---|---|---|---|
| EMS | 7-12 business days | $49, free on orders over $180 | Yes, unless you write "No signature" in checkout notes |
| Registered Airmail | 10-18 days | $39, free on orders over $130 | No |
There's also US domestic shipping via USPS Priority Mail Express on certain products, which Afinil says takes 3-4 days or even overnight. We go into that in our domestic USPS shipping review.
Two quirks worth knowing. First, tracking for parcels from Singapore may not show anything until the package lands in the US, which can freak people out. Give it a few days. Second, Afinil says it splits big orders (it mentions 500 tablets) into smaller parcels sent a few days apart, because customs pays more attention to big packages. That tells you two things: they know customs is a real risk, and you shouldn't panic if half your order shows up first.
Afinil also lists countries it won't ship to directly and suggests parcel forwarding services for them. That's worth noticing even as a US buyer: a vendor that works around customs rules elsewhere is telling you how it thinks about customs in general.
How payment works
Afinil says it accepts Bitcoin, Visa and Mastercard. In practice:
- Bitcoin gets the biggest discount (Afinil advertises 24% off at the time we checked; these promos change). Fast, but irreversible.
- Cards are processed overseas. Your bank may block the payment because it's foreign, so you might need to call your bank. You might see a merchant name that isn't "Afinil." Afinil warns that a chargeback costs you your account with them.
Made-up example to show how the Bitcoin discount works: if your cart came to $100 and the Bitcoin discount was 24%, you'd pay about $76 plus whatever your exchange or wallet charges to send the coins. Those network and exchange fees can eat a surprising chunk of a small order, so the discount matters most on bigger carts.
We break this down step by step in our Afinil Bitcoin guide.
What happens when something goes wrong
This is where a vendor proves itself. Afinil's stated rules:
- If your order hasn't arrived within the stated window, check the tracking page first.
- Contact support with your order number and email.
- If the postal service can't fix the non-delivery, they reship or refund, your choice.
- Refunds take up to 14 business days, usually 2-5.
- If you gave a bad address or didn't pick up the parcel after a failed delivery, they only reship, no refund.
- You can cancel within 2 hours of placing a paid order.
That's a decent policy on paper. Whether it holds up depends on support actually answering, and we'd love to hear from readers about their experiences. Our full walkthrough is in the reshipment policy explainer.
The legal bit you can't skip
We're not lawyers, and this isn't legal advice, but here's what the official sources say:
- United States: modafinil is listed in Schedule IV of the Controlled Substances Act (21 CFR 1308.14). The FDA says personal importation of controlled substances is a matter for the DEA. Buying from an overseas vendor without a prescription is not a legal route.
- Prescriptions: a Schedule IV prescription must come from a DEA-registered prescriber, and federal rules allow at most five refills within six months.
- Customs: CBP can detain or seize parcels of controlled substances that arrive without a prescription, and you may get a seizure notice by mail.
- Pharmacies: FDA-approved generic modafinil is sold by licensed US pharmacies, and many insurance plans cover it for its approved uses.
So a vendor can be "legit" in the sense of shipping real product, and still be selling you something you're not allowed to import. Read our US legal notes before you order, and if you have a medical need for modafinil, the honest best route is a doctor and a prescription. Our online prescription guide covers how telehealth fits in.
Health stuff your buddy would tell you
Modafinil and armodafinil are real medicines. The FDA label for Provigil warns about rare but serious skin rashes, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and says to stop taking it at the first sign of a rash. It can make hormonal birth control less effective, both while you take it and for a month after you stop. It can interact with other drugs, it can make anxiety and insomnia worse, and it's not something to mix with heavy drinking.
None of that means you'll have a bad time. It means you should run it by a doctor, especially if you take other meds, have heart issues or have a history of mental health conditions. See our medical disclaimer.
How Afinil compares to buying "the normal way"
| Afinil | Pharmacy with a prescription | |
|---|---|---|
| Needs a prescription | No | Yes |
| Price per pill | Low (Indian generics) | Often higher, depends on insurance |
| Legal certainty | Poor in the US | Clear |
| Quality oversight | Manufacturer's word, no local regulator | Regulated supply chain |
| Delivery | 3-30 days depending on route | Same day |
| Recourse if it goes wrong | Vendor policy only | Pharmacy, regulator, insurer |
Looking at that table honestly, the only columns where Afinil wins are price and convenience. If either of those is your priority, at least go in knowing the tradeoffs.
A sensible way to test Afinil
If you've weighed it up and want to try them, here's the order we'd do it in:
- Read the legal notes for your country.
- Talk to a doctor about whether modafinil makes sense for you at all.
- Order the free samples. Watch how long dispatch, tracking and delivery actually take.
- Check the packaging: blister packs, brand name, batch number, expiry date. If anything looks off, stop.
- If everything checks out, move up to a small paid order, preferably on a card so you have some recourse.
- Only then think about bigger packs or Bitcoin discounts.
It's boring advice, but boring is good when you're dealing with prescription drugs from overseas.
The usual complaints about vendors like this
We read through the kinds of complaints people post about modafinil vendors in general, Afinil included, and they fall into a few buckets. Knowing them in advance saves a lot of stress.
- "My tracking hasn't updated in a week." This is the most common one, and it's usually the Singapore routing thing: no scans until the parcel arrives in your country. It's annoying, not necessarily a problem. Afinil's own window for EMS to the US is 7-12 business days, so don't email support on day four.
- "Customs sent me a letter." This is the one that actually matters. In the US, customs can seize prescription drugs that arrive without a prescription. Afinil says it will reship or refund seized parcels, but a seizure letter is also a reminder that you're doing something the law doesn't allow. Read it carefully, and don't ignore it.
- "My card got declined." Overseas processors plus a pharmacy-type product is a combo many banks flag. Afinil tells customers to call their bank and approve foreign transactions, and to check email for alternative instructions.
- "The pills look different from last time." Generic brands change packaging and the house brand can come from different batches. Check that the blister has a brand name, strength, batch number and expiry date. If you're not sure, ask support for a photo of the current packaging before you reorder.
- "Support took days to reply." Small vendors have small teams. If something's urgent, use the request form and include your order number in the first message so they don't have to ask.
Questions worth asking Afinil support before a big order
If you're about to spend real money, send support a quick message first. How fast and how clearly they answer tells you a lot.
- Which warehouse would my order ship from, and which method would you use for my country?
- If my parcel is seized, what proof do you need from me for a reship?
- Is the item I want currently in stock for US domestic shipping, or would it come from overseas?
- What merchant name will show on my card statement?
- What's the expiry date on the current batch?
A vendor that answers all five without dodging is one we'd feel better about. A vendor that only replies "order now, best quality guaranteed" is telling you something too.
The bottom line
Afinil seems to be a real vendor with real products and better written policies than most of its competitors. It is also an unregulated, grey-market seller of a prescription drug, and there's a credible-sounding but unproven claim that it's tied to another vendor. If you go ahead, go small, go with samples first, and get a doctor in the loop.

One last sanity check
Before you place a first order with any vendor, Afinil included, take thirty seconds to confirm you're on the real site (afinil.com or its listed country sites), not a lookalike domain that copies the design.
FAQ
Is Afinil a scam?
We found no evidence that Afinil takes money and ships nothing. It publishes a clear reship and refund policy and offers free samples. There is one Reddit thread claiming it is the same operator as ModafinilXL under another name; that may or may not be true, and it does not by itself mean products are fake. Test with samples first.
Who makes the pills Afinil sells?
Afinil sells Indian generics. By its own product pages, ModaXL and ArmodaXL are made by HOF Pharmaceuticals, Modvigil and Artvigil by HAB Pharma, and Modalert and Waklert by Sun Pharma.
Does Afinil need a prescription?
No. Afinil sells without asking for one. That is exactly why you should read our legal notes: in the US modafinil is a Schedule IV controlled substance, and you need a valid prescription from a licensed US prescriber.
What happens if my Afinil order gets seized?
Afinil says it will reship or refund if a package is lost, damaged or seized, and that it reships when an order is stuck for more than 15 business days. You need to contact support; it is not automatic.
Is it safe to pay Afinil by card?
Card payments go through third-party processors in Europe or Asia, so your statement may show a different merchant name and up to about 5% in exchange fees. That is normal for this kind of shop but surprises people, so do not file a chargeback by mistake.
