Modafinil and armodafinil are real medicines

They're approved in many countries to treat excessive sleepiness from narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea and shift work disorder. The official labels warn about:

• Rare but serious skin reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Stop and get medical help at the first sign of a rash.
• Psychiatric symptoms such as anxiety, agitation, mania or depression.
• Heart-related symptoms in some people, including chest pain and palpitations.
• Reduced effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives during use and for a month after stopping.
• Interactions with other medications.
