· · Fact-checked October 2026 · How we review

Modafinil expiration and storage checklist
What to check on a modafinil pack and how to store it

Found an old strip of modafinil in a drawer, or thinking about buying a big pack to get a lower price? Either way, the question is the same: how long does modafinil last before it expires? This guide explains what the expiration date means, what the FDA says about expired tablets, how to store modafinil so it lasts until that date, and how to get rid of old tablets. It isn't medical advice.

The short answer

  • Modafinil does expire. The date is printed on the bottle or blister strip, usually after "EXP."
  • There's no universal shelf life. Each manufacturer sets its own, based on stability testing of its product.
  • Don't use expired tablets. The FDA says that after the expiration date, safety and effectiveness can't be guaranteed.
  • Storage matters. The Provigil label says to store tablets at 68 to 77°F (20 to 25°C).
  • Dispose of old tablets properly. Take-back sites and mail-back envelopes come first.

What an expiration date means

The FDA has required expiration dates on medicines since 1979. The manufacturer sets the date after testing how long the product stays stable and at full strength under the stated storage conditions. Up to that date, the manufacturer stands behind the product's strength, quality and purity, as long as it's been stored correctly.

The date is usually printed after "EXP" on the bottle, carton or the back of each blister strip. If you see only a month and year, the product is generally good through the end of that month, but check with your pharmacist if you're unsure.

How long modafinil lasts

There isn't a single shelf life for modafinil. It depends on the maker, the tablet formula and the packaging. A few reference points:

  • US prescription bottles. Your pharmacy may print a "discard after" or "use by" date on the label. It can be earlier than the manufacturer's date. Follow the earlier one.
  • Indian export brands. Each blister strip carries the maker's expiration date. Afinil says its ModaXL 200 mg keeps for up to 3 years, but that's the seller's claim; the date on your strip is what counts.
  • Old stock. A strip may already be partway through its shelf life when it arrives, so check the date before you open it.

Can you take expired modafinil?

The FDA's guidance on expired medicines is direct: "If your medicine has expired, do not use it." After the expiration date, there's no guarantee the medicine is still safe or effective. Some medicines lose strength over time, and changes in the chemical makeup of a tablet can't be seen from the outside.

You may have read that the military tests some drugs beyond their labeled dates. That's the federal Shelf-Life Extension Program (SLEP). According to the FDA, it's limited to certain federally stockpiled products that undergo periodic stability testing by the FDA, stored under controlled conditions. It doesn't mean tablets in your drawer are fine after their date.

If you're out of date, get a new supply rather than "using up" old tablets.

How to store modafinil

The US labels give clear storage instructions:

  • Temperature: The Provigil and Nuvigil labels say to store tablets at 68 to 77°F (20 to 25°C).
  • Moisture: The FDA advises keeping medicines in a cool, dry place. A bathroom cabinet gets humid from showers, so a bedroom drawer or kitchen cupboard away from the stove is usually better.
  • Original packaging: Keep tablets in their bottle or blister strip. Blisters protect each tablet from air and moisture, and they carry the batch number and expiry date.
  • Safety: Keep modafinil out of reach of children. The label also says to keep it in a safe place to prevent misuse.

Things that can shorten a tablet's useful life:

  • heat, such as a hot car or a sunny windowsill
  • humidity and steam
  • removing tablets from blisters and storing them loose for a long time
  • crushed, cracked or discolored tablets (don't use those)

How long would a big pack last you?

Bulk packs lower the price per tablet, but only if you use them before they expire. Here's example math, assuming one tablet a day for every day (not a dosing recommendation; your prescriber sets your schedule):

Pack sizeDays to finish at 1 tablet a dayRough time
30 tablets30 days1 month
100 tablets100 daysabout 3 months
300 tablets300 daysabout 10 months
500 tablets500 daysabout 16 months
1,000 tablets1,000 daysabout 2.7 years

If you take modafinil only on some days, a big pack lasts much longer, and it may reach its expiration date before you finish it. A 1,000-tablet pack is cheapest per tablet, but it's no saving if a few hundred tablets go out of date.

For reference, when we checked Afinil on October 22, 2026, ModaXL 200 mg cost $3.99 a tablet in 10-packs, $1.99 at 100 tablets and $1.09 at 1,000 tablets. Check the live page, and check the dates on what arrives.

What to check when a pack arrives

  1. The expiration date on every strip, not just the first.
  2. The batch or lot number, which should match across strips from the same box.
  3. The brand name, strength and maker, which should match what you ordered.
  4. The tablets themselves. Don't use tablets that are cracked, crumbling, discolored or smell unusual.

If something looks off, contact the seller before taking anything.

How to dispose of expired modafinil

The FDA lists these options, in order of preference:

  1. Drug take-back locations. Many pharmacies and police stations have permanent drop boxes, and the DEA runs National Prescription Drug Take Back Days. Controlled substances like modafinil can go in these.
  2. Prepaid mail-back envelopes. Some pharmacies offer them.
  3. The FDA flush list. Only certain medicines should be flushed. Modafinil and armodafinil weren't on the FDA flush list when we checked on October 22, 2026, so don't flush them.
  4. Household trash, if nothing else is available. The FDA's steps: take the tablets out of their container; mix them, without crushing, with something unappealing like dirt, cat litter or used coffee grounds; seal the mixture in a plastic bag or container; throw it in your household trash; and scratch out personal information on the empty bottle or packaging before you trash or recycle it.

Don't give leftover tablets to friends or family. The labels for modafinil and armodafinil say selling or giving them away is against the law, and it can harm someone they weren't prescribed for.

Safety notes

Expired or poorly stored tablets aren't the only risk. The Provigil label includes warnings about serious rash, allergic reactions and psychiatric symptoms at any time. If you have questions about a specific pack, ask a pharmacist. You can also call the FDA at 1-888-INFO-FDA (1-888-463-6332). See our medical disclaimer.

Buying modafinil in the US

Modafinil is a Schedule IV controlled substance in the US. It's legal with a valid prescription filled by a licensed pharmacy. Buying it without one, including from overseas sellers, can break federal and state law, and imported shipments can be seized. Our legal notes cover the details, and our guide to getting a modafinil prescription from an online doctor explains the legal route.

Verdict

Modafinil does expire, and the date on your pack is the one to follow. The FDA's advice is not to use expired medicine, so treat the expiration date as a hard stop. Store tablets at room temperature in a dry place, in their original packs, and buy only as much as you'll realistically use before the date. When tablets do expire, a take-back site or mail-back envelope is the best way to get rid of them.

FAQ

How long does modafinil take to expire?

There's no single number. The expiration date is set by the manufacturer and printed on the pack after "EXP." Afinil says its ModaXL 200 mg lasts up to 3 years, but always go by the date on your pack.

Can I take expired modafinil?

The FDA's advice is not to use expired medicine. After the expiration date, there's no guarantee the tablet is still safe or works as intended.

Does expired modafinil become dangerous?

The FDA says expired medicines can be less effective and that their safety can't be guaranteed. Don't take expired tablets; dispose of them and get a new supply.

How should I store modafinil?

The Provigil label says to store the tablets at 68 to 77°F (20 to 25°C). Keep them dry, in the original container or blister, and out of reach of children. A bathroom cabinet is usually too humid.

Does the pharmacy label date mean the same thing?

Not always. Some pharmacies print a "discard after" date on your bottle, which can be earlier than the manufacturer's date. Follow whichever date is earlier.

Can I flush expired modafinil?

Modafinil wasn't on the FDA's flush list when we checked on October 22, 2026. Use a take-back site or mail-back envelope first, and the FDA's household trash method if neither is available.

Can I give my leftover modafinil to someone else?

No. Modafinil is a Schedule IV controlled substance, and the label says selling or giving it away is against the law.

Does armodafinil expire too?

Yes. Armodafinil packs carry their own expiration date, and the same FDA advice on storage, expiry and disposal applies.
