Modavinil 200 mg Review: Centurion's Generic Modafinil

· · Fact-checked October 2026 · How we review

Modavinil 200 mg tablet illustration
Modavinil is a 200 mg modafinil generic from Centurion

Modavinil 200 mg is one of the newer modafinil generics on Afinil's shelves. It doesn't have the long track record of Modalert or Modvigil, so most people searching for a "Modavinil review" want the same three things: who makes it, whether it's the real deal, and whether it's worth buying over the brands they already know.

This review pulls together what the official modafinil label says, what Afinil states on its own product page, and the honest gaps where nobody has solid data. We haven't lab-tested Modavinil ourselves, and we won't pretend otherwise.

Modavinil 200 mg: the quick facts

  • Active ingredient: modafinil, 200 mg per tablet.
  • Maker: Centurion Laboratories, according to Afinil.
  • Generic of: Provigil, the original modafinil brand.
  • Sister product: Armodavinil 150 mg (armodafinil), also from Centurion.
  • Where we found it: Afinil, which also sells it in a Modavinil + Armodavinil premium pack.
  • Legal status (US): Schedule IV, prescription-only.

That's a short list, and it's meant to be. A modafinil generic is mostly defined by two things: the dose of the active ingredient and how well the maker produces the tablet. The first is the same as every other 200 mg brand. The second is where the questions are.

Who is Centurion Laboratories?

Centurion Laboratories is an Indian pharmaceutical company. Afinil describes it as a "reputable world-class" maker, which is the kind of phrase every vendor uses for every brand, so we'd treat that as marketing rather than evidence.

What we can say:

  • Centurion is a smaller name in the modafinil world than Sun Pharma (Modalert, Waklert) or HAB Pharma (Modvigil, Artvigil).
  • Its modafinil and armodafinil products show up at fewer vendors, which means fewer user reports to go on.
  • We didn't find public, independent lab analysis of Modavinil. That's common: very few grey-market generics are ever tested by a third party in a way you can read.

Smaller doesn't mean worse. It just means you're leaning more on the vendor's word and less on a mountain of user history. If that bothers you, that's a reasonable reason to choose a better-known brand.

What Afinil says about Modavinil

Afinil's product page makes a few claims worth flagging, so you can weigh them yourself:

  1. It's pitched as a replacement for Modalert. The page says Modalert and Waklert "will no longer be available on the market" because of legal issues at Sun Pharma, and calls Modavinil and Armodavinil the best replacements. Afinil still lists Modalert and Waklert for sale, so treat that claim as dated or as sales copy. We haven't confirmed any such market withdrawal.
  2. It's described as high purity with few side effects. No test data is shown to back that up. Modafinil's side effects come from modafinil itself, so no brand can promise you'll avoid them.
  3. It's labeled "OTC". That's Afinil's wording. In the US modafinil is a prescription-only Schedule IV medicine. A store label doesn't change that.

None of this means Modavinil is a bad product. It means the sales page is a sales page. Read our Afinil vendor review for how the store itself handles orders, refunds and reships.

How modafinil works, in plain terms

Modavinil contains modafinil, a wakefulness-promoting medicine. The FDA label for Provigil says its exact mechanism isn't fully understood, but it binds to the dopamine transporter and raises dopamine levels outside nerve cells. It isn't an amphetamine, though the label notes it can produce effects that feel stimulant-like, including in mood and perception.

In the US, modafinil is approved to improve wakefulness in adults with excessive sleepiness from three conditions:

  • Narcolepsy.
  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), as an add-on to CPAP or other primary treatment, not a replacement.
  • Shift work disorder (SWD).

Off-label use for focus or productivity is common, but the label doesn't approve it, and the evidence for healthy people is far weaker than many forum posts suggest. If persistent tiredness is why you're looking, a sleep evaluation is often the better first step.

Label dosing and timing

The Provigil label gives a simple dosing picture, and it applies to any modafinil 200 mg tablet:

  • Narcolepsy and OSA: 200 mg once a day, in the morning.
  • Shift work disorder: 200 mg about one hour before the start of the shift.
  • Higher doses: up to 400 mg a day was well tolerated in trials, but there was no consistent evidence of extra benefit over 200 mg.
  • Severe liver impairment: the label recommends a reduced dose.
  • Older adults: lower doses should be considered.

For more on why "more milligrams" rarely means "more effect", see our modafinil 300 mg vs 200 mg guide.

Why morning timing matters so much

The label lists modafinil's effective elimination half-life at about 15 hours after repeated dosing, with peak blood levels at about two to four hours. That's a long tail. A tablet taken at noon is still very much in your system at bedtime.

Made-up example: if you take Modavinil at 7 AM, you'd still have roughly half the dose in your body around 10 PM. Take it at 11 AM, and that halfway point moves past 2 AM. That's why most "it ruined my sleep" stories start with a late dose.

Food and onset

Taking modafinil with food doesn't change how much you absorb overall, but the label says it can delay the peak by about an hour. If you want it to kick in sooner, a light breakfast is a reasonable middle ground. If you're sensitive to nausea, some food may help.

What to expect from a 200 mg tablet

People describe modafinil as subtle. It isn't a rush. Typical user accounts describe:

  • Feeling awake without the jittery edge of strong coffee.
  • An easier time staying on one task.
  • Less of the afternoon slump.
  • Reduced appetite, sometimes.

These are anecdotes, not trial results. Some people feel little at all, especially if they're already well rested. Others feel too wired at 200 mg and do better with less, under a doctor's guidance.

Side effects listed on the label

Because Modavinil is modafinil, the official Provigil label is the right place to look. In its clinical trials, the most common side effects (at least 5% of patients, and more often than placebo) were:

  • Headache (the most common by a wide margin).
  • Nausea.
  • Nervousness.
  • Rhinitis (runny or stuffy nose).
  • Back pain.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Anxiety.
  • Insomnia.
  • Dizziness.
  • Dyspepsia (indigestion).

Rare but serious warnings

The label carries warnings that matter no matter which brand you buy:

  • Serious rash, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Stop at the first sign of a rash and get medical help.
  • Allergic reactions such as swelling of the face, throat or tongue, or trouble breathing.
  • Psychiatric symptoms, including anxiety, mania, delusions, hallucinations, and suicidal thoughts.
  • Heart symptoms such as chest pain or palpitations; the label advises caution in people with certain heart conditions.
  • Hormonal birth control can be less effective while taking modafinil and for a month after stopping, per the label. Ask your doctor about backup methods.

None of these are reasons to panic. They are reasons to talk to a doctor first and to stop if something feels wrong. Our medical disclaimer explains what this site can and can't tell you.

Example per-pill price by pack size

Price: what Afinil listed when we checked

On October 22, 2026, Afinil's Modavinil 200 mg page listed these pack sizes and per-pill prices. Treat them as a snapshot. Prices, discounts and shipping thresholds change, so always check the live page.

Pack sizeListed price per pill
10 pills$3.99
20 pills$3.49
30 pills$2.99
50 pills$2.39
100 pills$1.99
200 pills$1.69
300 pills$1.66
500 pills$1.59
1,000 pills$1.09

The headline range on the page was $39 to $1,099. That ladder matched what Afinil listed for several of its other 200 mg brands on the same day, so Modavinil isn't a budget brand or a premium brand at Afinil; it sits at the same price as its neighbours.

Afinil also advertises a discount for paying with crypto and free shipping above a spend threshold. The page showed two different thresholds ($130 and $180) in different places when we looked, so check the cart before you count on free shipping. Our paying with bitcoin guide walks through how the crypto discount works.

A note on buying big packs

The per-pill price drops a lot with quantity. That's tempting, but there are three good reasons not to start with a large pack:

  1. You don't yet know whether modafinil, or this brand, suits you.
  2. Large orders can attract more attention at customs in countries where import without a prescription is illegal.
  3. Medicine doesn't last forever. Check the expiry date on any pack you receive.

Made-up example: a 10-pill order at $3.99 a pill costs about $40. A 1,000-pill order at $1.09 costs about $1,090. If you discover after three tablets that modafinil gives you headaches, the small order cost you $40 to learn that; the big one cost you over a thousand.

Modavinil vs the brands you know

All of the products below contain modafinil 200 mg, except where noted. They are pharmacologically the same drug at the same dose. Differences come down to the maker, the fillers, the tablet's consistency, and how much user experience exists.

Modavinil vs ModaXL

ModaXL is Afinil's house favourite and has a domestic USPS listing for US buyers. If you're in the US and want the shortest shipping route, ModaXL is the more practical choice. See our ModaXL 200 mg review and the domestic USPS shipping review.

Afinil makes extra claims for ModaXL, like faster absorption and a stronger peak, that we can't verify. Don't pick either brand on those claims alone.

Modavinil vs Modalert

Modalert has the longest track record of any Indian modafinil generic. If you value thousands of user reports over everything else, it's still the reference point. Our ModaXL vs Modalert comparison covers why that history matters.

Modavinil vs Modvigil

Modvigil is often the budget pick at other vendors and has a large user base. At Afinil, prices for these brands are close, so the choice is more about which maker you trust. See Modvigil vs Modalert.

Modavinil vs Modafil MD

Modafil MD is a sublingual (under-the-tongue) modafinil. Some people prefer it for the format. Our sublingual Modafil MD review explains what's actually known about sublingual dosing and what's just marketing.

Modavinil and Armodavinil: should you get the pack?

Centurion's pairing is Modavinil (modafinil) and Armodavinil (armodafinil). Afinil sells them together as a premium pack.

Armodafinil is the R-isomer of modafinil, the longer-lasting half of the molecule. The Nuvigil label doses it at 150 to 250 mg once a day. People often describe it as longer and smoother. It isn't stronger in a dangerous way, but it does last later into the day, which matters even more for sleep.

The pack makes sense if:

  • You've never tried either and want to learn which one suits you, with your doctor's input.
  • You like the idea of sticking to one maker.

It makes less sense if you already know modafinil works for you and you just want the best per-pill price on one product. Read our Armodavinil 150 mg review and the modafinil and armodafinil saver pack review for the alternatives.

Never take modafinil and armodafinil on the same day. They're closely related, and doubling up raises side-effect risk without a meaningful benefit.

Is Modavinil "real"? How to judge a generic you can't test

The honest answer is that you can't confirm what's in any tablet without a lab. What you can do is stack the odds:

  1. Buy from a vendor with a real refund and reship policy. Afinil publishes one; see our reshipment policy explainer.
  2. Check the packaging. Strip packs should have a batch number, a manufacturing date and an expiry date. Missing or smudged details are a warning sign.
  3. Notice whether it works the way modafinil usually works. A long, mild wakefulness lasting most of the day is typical. A sudden strong rush, or nothing at all on a tired day, is unusual and worth questioning.
  4. Start small. A small order limits what you lose if a batch disappoints.
  5. Don't rely on star ratings alone. Vendor review systems show buyers' opinions, not lab results.

Who Modavinil suits

  • Shoppers who want to try a different maker. If another brand gave you headaches or felt "off", a different tablet formulation is a reasonable thing to try, though the drug is the same.
  • People interested in the Centurion pack. Modavinil plus Armodavinil from one maker.
  • Buyers who aren't in a hurry. Without a domestic US listing, expect international shipping times.

Who should probably pick something else

  • US buyers who want speed. ModaXL's domestic listing is the faster route.
  • People who want the most-reviewed brand. Modalert or Modvigil have more user history.
  • Anyone who hasn't spoken to a doctor. Modafinil is a prescription medicine for good reasons. See our guide to getting a modafinil prescription from an online doctor.
  • Anyone with heart, liver or mental-health conditions. These need a doctor's input before any modafinil brand.

Legal reality check

US law matters more than any product detail.

  • United States: modafinil is a Schedule IV controlled substance. It's prescription-only, and importing it without a prescription is illegal. Customs (CBP) can seize parcels.
  • Prescriptions: a Schedule IV prescription has to come from a DEA-registered prescriber, and federal rules allow at most five refills within six months.
  • Store labels: Afinil's "OTC" wording doesn't change federal law. Modavinil isn't FDA-approved.
  • Legal route: FDA-approved generic modafinil is sold by licensed US pharmacies with a prescription.

We explain the US rules in our legal notes. Nothing here is legal advice.

Storage and handling

The label advice for modafinil is simple: store at room temperature, keep it in its original packaging, and keep it away from children. If tablets arrive damaged, discoloured or crumbling, don't take them; contact the vendor about a replacement.

Getting the most from a 200 mg dose (without raising it)

Most "it isn't working" complaints have ordinary causes. Before thinking about brand switches or higher doses, check:

  • Sleep. Modafinil reduces sleepiness; it doesn't replace sleep. A five-hour night feels like a five-hour night.
  • Timing. An early dose works better and disrupts sleep less.
  • Food. A heavy breakfast can delay the peak.
  • Caffeine. Stacking strong coffee on top of modafinil is a common cause of jitters and headaches. Cut back.
  • Water. Headache, the most common side effect, is often worse when people forget to drink.
  • Frequency. Taking it every day can make it feel weaker to some people. Using it only when needed, with your doctor's okay, is the usual advice.

Made-up example: someone takes Modavinil at 10 AM after a big breakfast and two espressos, sleeps badly, and decides the brand is weak. The same person taking it at 7 AM with toast and one coffee might have a completely different day.

What we'd still like to know

We'll be upfront about the gaps:

  • No independent lab test of Modavinil that we could find.
  • Few detailed user reports compared with older brands.
  • No published bioequivalence data comparing it with Provigil.

These gaps apply to most grey-market generics, not just this one. They're a reason for caution and small first orders, not a reason to assume the worst.

How to order sensibly at Afinil

If you've talked it through with your doctor and decide to try Modavinil:

  1. Start with a small pack (10 or 20 pills).
  2. Check the cart for shipping costs and any free-shipping threshold.
  3. Decide on payment. Card, PayPal-style options and crypto were listed; crypto carried a discount when we checked.
  4. Keep your order confirmation and tracking.
  5. Inspect the strips on arrival: batch, manufacturing date, expiry.
  6. If something's wrong, contact Afinil support before opening a dispute; their reship policy is usually the faster fix.

Want a free first look at modafinil before spending? Afinil runs a samples offer; see our free modafinil samples review.

Shift work and Modavinil

Shift work disorder is one of the three approved uses for modafinil, and it's where timing rules change. The label dose for shift work is 200 mg taken about an hour before the shift starts, not in the morning.

That creates a real sleep problem if you're not careful. Made-up example: a nurse starting at 7 PM takes a tablet at 6 PM. With a half-life of around 15 hours, a good share of that dose is still around when they try to sleep at 9 AM. Many shift workers find they need blackout curtains, a fixed sleep window and no caffeine late in the shift to make it work.

If your schedule rotates between days and nights, that's a conversation to have with a doctor before using any modafinil brand, because the "right time" moves every week.

Questions worth asking your doctor

A short appointment goes further if you walk in with specific questions. Here are the ones we'd bring:

  1. Is my daytime sleepiness a sign of a sleep disorder that should be tested, such as sleep apnea?
  2. Is modafinil appropriate for me, given my heart health, blood pressure and mental-health history?
  3. What dose should I start at, and should it be lower than 200 mg?
  4. What time of day should I take it, given my work schedule?
  5. Does it affect any medication or birth control I use, and what should I do about that?
  6. Which side effects mean I should stop right away?
  7. How often is it reasonable for me to take it?

Bring a list of everything you take, including supplements. The doctor can check it properly; we can't.

A sensible first two weeks

If your doctor agrees modafinil is suitable, a calm, structured start tells you far more than random doses on stressful days. Here's an example plan. It's an example, not a prescription.

DayWhat to doWhat to note
Day 1Take the dose your doctor advised, early morning, light breakfastOnset time, headache, appetite, sleep that night
Day 2No doseHow you slept, any lingering effects
Day 3Repeat day 1Compare with day 1
Days 4-7Use only on days you actually need itSleep quality on dose days vs off days
Days 8-14Keep the same routineWhether the benefit is worth the side effects

Keep notes in your phone. After two weeks you'll know whether Modavinil is doing something useful for you, or whether it mostly costs you sleep. Share the notes with your doctor at your next check-in.

Signs a batch might not be right

Even good makers have bad batches, and counterfeit tablets do exist in the wider market. These are reasons to pause and contact the vendor:

  • Tablets look different from the ones you received before (colour, size, markings) with no explanation.
  • The strip packaging is missing batch or expiry details.
  • Tablets crumble, smell odd or are discoloured.
  • You feel a strong, fast "rush" that is nothing like typical modafinil.
  • You feel absolutely nothing on several well-timed doses, when the same dose of another brand worked.

Don't keep taking tablets you're unsure about. Afinil's support and reship process is the route for a replacement, and your doctor is the route if you feel unwell.

Modavinil for studying and work: keep expectations realistic

A lot of searches for Modavinil come from students and people with long workdays. Here's the honest picture. In people who aren't sleep-deprived, research on modafinil's effects on thinking is mixed: some studies find modest gains on certain tasks, others find little. It's not a shortcut to better grades or better work.

Where it reliably helps is the thing it's approved for: reducing excessive sleepiness in people with specific sleep disorders. If you're using it to push through chronic short sleep, the better long-term fix is usually the sleep itself. And because modafinil is prescription-only, using it without one carries legal risk on top of the health questions.

Comparing the cost per month (example only)

People often ask what Modavinil "costs per month". It depends entirely on how often you use it, which is a medical question. As a pure arithmetic example, using the prices listed when we checked:

  • Using it 8 days a month from a 30-pill pack ($2.99 each): about $24 of tablets a month, and the pack lasts almost four months.
  • Using it 20 days a month from a 100-pill pack ($1.99 each): about $40 a month, and the pack lasts five months.

Those figures leave out shipping and any discount, and they aren't a dosing suggestion. They're here to show that buying a huge pack only saves money if you'd actually use it before it expires.

Common Modavinil mistakes we see in forum posts

Reading through user threads, the same handful of mistakes come up again and again. None of them are brand problems:

  • Re-dosing in the afternoon because the morning tablet "wore off". With a 15-hour half-life, a second dose mostly lands on your night's sleep.
  • Judging the brand on one day. A single bad night or a stressful morning can make any tablet feel weak.
  • Switching brands and dose at the same time. If you change both, you can't tell which change mattered.
  • Ignoring a mild rash. The label is clear that a rash is a reason to stop and get checked, not something to push through.
  • Buying a year's supply first. Start small, as covered above.
  • Skipping the doctor because the store says "OTC". The store's label doesn't decide what's legal or safe for you.

Avoid those, and whatever brand you pick will get a fair trial.

Verdict

Modavinil 200 mg is a standard modafinil tablet from a smaller maker, Centurion Laboratories, sold at Afinil at the same price ladder as its better-known 200 mg brands. On paper it's the same drug at the same dose as Modalert, Modvigil and ModaXL. What it lacks is history: fewer user reports and no independent testing we could find.

That makes it a reasonable choice if you want to try a different maker, or if you're interested in the Centurion pack with Armodavinil. If you're in the US and want fast domestic delivery, or you want the most-reviewed brand, ModaXL or Modalert are the more practical picks. Whatever you choose, start small, dose early, and talk to a doctor first, because modafinil is a prescription medicine everywhere this site covers.

FAQ

Who makes Modavinil 200 mg?

Afinil lists the manufacturer as Centurion Laboratories, an Indian company that also makes Armodavinil. We couldn't find independent lab testing of Modavinil, which is normal for these generics.

Is Modavinil the same as Provigil?

It contains the same active ingredient, modafinil, at the standard 200 mg strength. It isn't an FDA-approved product in the US, so it hasn't gone through the FDA's generic review.

How long does Modavinil last?

The Provigil label puts modafinil's effective half-life at about 15 hours after repeated dosing, so most people feel it for much of the day. Take it early to protect sleep.

Is Modavinil stronger than Modalert?

Not on paper. Both are 200 mg modafinil. Any difference people report comes down to fillers, tablet quality, expectations and how they slept, and there's no head-to-head data.

How much does Modavinil cost at Afinil?

When we checked on October 22, 2026, Afinil listed it from $39 for 10 pills ($3.99 each) down to $1.09 each at 1,000 pills. Prices change, so check the product page before you order.

Do I need a prescription for Modavinil?

In the US, modafinil is a Schedule IV controlled substance and prescription-only. Federal rules allow a Schedule IV prescription to be refilled at most five times within six months. Afinil labels the product "OTC", but that doesn't change your local law.

Can I split a Modavinil tablet?

Ask a pharmacist. Not every tablet is scored or splits evenly, so half-tablets can give uneven doses.

What are the most common side effects?

In the Provigil label's trials, headache was the most common, followed by nausea, nervousness, a runny nose, back pain, diarrhea, anxiety, insomnia and dizziness.

When should I stop taking it right away?

Stop and get medical help if you get a rash, blisters, mouth sores, swelling, chest pain, or mental-health symptoms like hallucinations or suicidal thoughts. The label lists these as rare but serious.

Is Modavinil good for a first try?

It can be, but a small pack is the sensible start. Afinil's 10-pill option costs more per pill but keeps your spend low while you learn how modafinil suits you.

Can I get Modavinil with US domestic shipping?

We didn't see a domestic US listing for Modavinil when we checked. ModaXL has a domestic USPS option at Afinil if delivery speed inside the US matters to you.

Is there a Modavinil and Armodavinil pack?

Yes. Afinil sells a Modavinil + Armodavinil premium pack from Centurion, for people who want to compare modafinil and armodafinil from the same maker.
