ArmodaXL versus Waklert comparison
ArmodaXL and Waklert side by side

If you've settled on armodafinil, the next fork in the road is usually ArmodaXL or Waklert. Waklert is the long-standing name from Sun Pharma; ArmodaXL is the Afinil house brand. Both are 150 mg armodafinil. Here's what actually separates them and how we'd choose.

What armodafinil is, briefly

Armodafinil is the R-enantiomer of modafinil, the longer-lasting half of the molecule. It's the active ingredient in brand-name Nuvigil, approved for excessive sleepiness from narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea and shift work disorder. The Nuvigil label doses are 150 mg to 250 mg once daily depending on the condition, with 150 mg for shift work disorder taken about an hour before the shift.

Because more drug is still around later in the day, armodafinil often feels longer and flatter than modafinil. That's either a perk or a problem, depending on your sleep.

The maker question

Waklert comes from Sun Pharma, the same company that makes Modalert. Big company, long history, and probably the most-reviewed armodafinil generic out there. ArmodaXL is from Afinil's XL line; Afinil names HOF Pharmaceuticals and describes WHO-GMP facilities, which we couldn't independently verify.

The "30% stronger" claim

Afinil's ArmodaXL page says tweaks to the inactive ingredients give up to 30% stronger peak effects and 5% better absorption. We'd love to see the data, but we couldn't find any published study backing it. Same dose of the same active ingredient usually means very similar effects. Treat it as marketing.

How each feels, according to users

Waklert is commonly described as long-lasting, steady and a bit "heavier" than modafinil. ArmodaXL reports are fewer, but describe much the same. Individual response varies a lot with armodafinil; some people find even 150 mg too long, and split doses or switch back to modafinil.

Modafinil vs armodafinil label doses
How armodafinil dosing compares with modafinil

Price and value

ArmodaXL is often the cheaper per-pill choice at Afinil, especially on larger packs, simply because it's the house brand. Waklert is still cheap compared with brand-name Nuvigil. Compare per-pill prices at the pack you'd actually buy, and factor in shipping thresholds (Afinil says EMS is free above $180 and Airmail above $130).

Duration and sleep

Armodafinil's long tail is the main thing to plan around. Made-up example: if you take armodafinil at 10am instead of 7am, you're effectively pushing the "still wired" window three hours later into your night. For most people, a morning dose is non-negotiable.

Choose ArmodaXL if...

  • Price per pill is your priority.
  • You want the option to step up to the 250 mg version, with your doctor's agreement.
  • You're already using ModaXL and like the house line.

Choose Waklert if...

  • You want the most established armodafinil generic from a major maker.
  • You value lots of user history over a small price difference.
  • You've used it before and it works.

What about Artvigil?

Artvigil from HAB Pharma is the third big name, and it's often a bit cheaper than Waklert. See Artvigil vs Waklert. If you're comparing with brand-name Nuvigil, read Waklert 150 mg vs Nuvigil generic.

Side effects and safety

Same for both: the Nuvigil label lists headache, nausea, dizziness and insomnia as the most common, and warns about serious rash, psychiatric symptoms, and reduced effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives. Any rash, chest pain or big mood change means stop and get medical help. See our medical disclaimer.

Legal note

Armodafinil is Schedule IV in the US and needs a valid prescription from a licensed US prescriber. Read the US legal notes.

How to choose in practice

  1. Decide with your doctor whether armodafinil suits you better than modafinil.
  2. Try the free armodafinil samples if available; they're the cheapest test.
  3. Use whichever brand you get on a normal workday, dosed early.
  4. Track sleep that night; it's the best signal of whether armodafinil is right for you.
  5. Pick on price once you know you tolerate armodafinil.

Mistakes we see a lot

  • Taking armodafinil at lunchtime "because the morning got busy."
  • Jumping to 250 mg after one so-so day.
  • Combining with energy drinks.
  • Assuming the cheaper brand must be weaker.

How armodafinil's timeline differs from modafinil

Armodafinil is the longer-lasting half of modafinil. On the Nuvigil label, peak levels arrive about 2 hours after a dose on an empty stomach, and the half-life is about 15 hours. Compared with modafinil at a typical dose, armodafinil levels stay higher later in the day. Made-up example: on a 7am dose, a modafinil user might feel things easing off mid-afternoon, while an armodafinil user is still noticeably alert at dinner. That's the case for both ArmodaXL and Waklert, since they're the same molecule at the same 150 mg.

Sun Pharma's Waklert credentials

Waklert is made by Sun Pharma, the same company behind Modalert. It has been sold internationally for years and is one of the most-discussed armodafinil generics online. That gives buyers a long record of experiences to compare against. ArmodaXL, Afinil's house brand, has a shorter public history. Afinil names HOF Pharmaceuticals as the maker, and we couldn't independently confirm the details. That's the key trade-off on this page: established brand vs house-brand value.

Three made-up buyer profiles

The night-shift nurse. Has a prescription for shift work disorder and wants something that lasts a 12-hour night. Either brand at 150 mg, taken an hour before the shift, is what the label describes. Their doctor's preference and a reliable supply matter more than the brand. A domestic option helps if they're in the US.

The armodafinil newcomer. Has used modafinil and wants to try armodafinil. Should start with free armodafinil samples or a small pack of Waklert, because of its track record, and dose early to protect sleep.

The bulk buyer. Knows armodafinil suits them and orders large packs. ArmodaXL with Bitcoin is likely the lowest cost per tablet.

These profiles are made up to show the reasoning.

The Artvigil angle

Artvigil 150 is HAB Pharma's armodafinil, and it's often a bit cheaper than Waklert. If you're choosing between ArmodaXL and Waklert on price, Artvigil is worth a look as a middle ground, with an established maker and a budget price. Our Artvigil vs Waklert page compares them.

The 250 mg question

Both lines have stronger options: Afinil sells an Extra Strong ArmodaXL 250, and HAB sells Artvigil 250. The label allows 250 mg for narcolepsy and sleep apnea, but in sleep apnea trials 250 mg didn't consistently add benefit over 150 mg. Higher doses usually mean more side effects, especially for sleep. See our Artvigil 250 review for more.

Armodafinil and sleep: a practical guide

Because armodafinil lasts longer, sleep is the main cost to plan around. Some practical rules:

  • Dose on waking. If you wake at 7, take it at 7, not at 10 once you're "settled."
  • No second dose. Don't take more in the afternoon if the effect feels lower. The tail is still there.
  • Watch the caffeine. Caffeine on top of armodafinil late in the day is a common cause of 2am wakefulness.
  • Plan your evening. Dim lights and quiet activities help even if you don't feel sleepy.
  • Skip days. Many occasional users take it only on their most demanding days, which helps keep sleep on track.

If you regularly can't sleep after a dose, that's a sign to talk to a doctor about the dose, the timing, or whether armodafinil suits you.

Cost math, made up

Made-up prices to show the method: ArmodaXL at $1.10 a tablet and Waklert at $1.30. At 2 tablets a week for 26 weeks, that's 52 tablets: about $57 vs about $68. With Bitcoin at 24% off: about $43 vs $51. Over six months the difference is less than $10. The deciding factor for most people should be trust and stock, not price. Always check live prices on Afinil before ordering.

Ordering either one from Afinil

Both are listed with international shipping and domestic US shipping options. International EMS takes 7-12 business days to the US, and Registered Airmail 10-18 days. EMS costs $49 and is free over $180. Airmail costs $39 and is free over $130. Tracking arrives within 24-72 hours. Larger orders can be split into several parcels with separate tracking numbers. US customs can still seize armodafinil that arrives without a prescription.

Who should talk to a doctor first

Anyone with heart problems, high blood pressure, a history of mental health conditions, liver issues, or who takes other regular medication, including hormonal birth control, which armodafinil can make less effective. Also anyone pregnant or breastfeeding. This applies equally to both brands.

What to check on arrival

Waklert strips typically carry Sun Pharma branding with the batch number and expiry printed on the foil. ArmodaXL comes in Afinil's house packaging. For both, make sure the strength reads 150 mg (not 250), the tablets match each other, and the expiry date is comfortably in the future. Photograph anything odd and send it to support before taking a dose.

Our pick

First armodafinil order: Waklert, for its track record. Repeat value orders: ArmodaXL. Either way, dose early, keep caffeine low, and protect your sleep.

Verdict

ArmodaXL and Waklert are both 150 mg armodafinil generics of Nuvigil. Waklert has the bigger name and the longer history; ArmodaXL is usually cheaper at Afinil and has a 250 mg sibling. The brand matters less than taking it early and making sure armodafinil suits you at all.

FAQ

Is ArmodaXL the same as Waklert?

Both contain 150 mg armodafinil and are generics of Nuvigil, but they're made by different companies: HOF Pharmaceuticals (ArmodaXL, per Afinil) and Sun Pharma (Waklert).

Which lasts longer, ArmodaXL or Waklert?

Same drug, same dose, so duration should be very similar. Armodafinil generally lasts longer than modafinil because the R-isomer is cleared more slowly.

Is there a stronger ArmodaXL?

Afinil sells an Extra Strong ArmodaXL 250 mg. The Nuvigil label says 250 mg was studied in sleep apnea without consistent extra benefit over 150 mg.

Can I get Waklert shipped within the US?

Afinil lists a Waklert domestic USPS shipping product, as well as ArmodaXL 150 mg with domestic US shipping.

Is Waklert more trusted than ArmodaXL?

Waklert has a longer public track record because Sun Pharma has sold it for many years. ArmodaXL is newer, and Afinil's own brand.

Which is cheaper, ArmodaXL or Waklert?

ArmodaXL is usually cheaper per tablet at Afinil. Check live prices.

Does Waklert come in a saver pack?

Yes. Afinil's saver pack pairs Modalert 200 and Waklert 150.

Can I switch from Waklert to ArmodaXL?

Same drug and dose, so switching is usually straightforward. Keep your timing the same.

Does ArmodaXL last longer than Waklert?

They're the same drug at the same dose, so any difference in duration comes down to the individual.

Is either brand approved by the FDA?

No. The FDA-approved armodafinil brand is Nuvigil, and its US generics. ArmodaXL and Waklert are overseas generics not approved for US sale.

Which is better for a long workday?

Both last a long time at 150 mg. Take either early. The brand matters less than the timing.
