Vilafinil 200 mg Review: A Lesser-Known Modafinil, Checked
Most modafinil buying guides talk about the same handful of names: Modalert, Modvigil, ModaXL, maybe Modafil MD. Vilafinil rarely makes the list. It's a 200 mg modafinil tablet from Centurion Laboratories, sold by a few export vendors including Afinil, and there's much less written about it. That's a reason for caution as well as curiosity, so this review sticks to what we could actually check.
Our sources: Afinil's Vilafinil 200 mg listing (checked October 22, 2026), its listings for comparable brands on the same day, and the FDA prescribing information for Provigil. We haven't bought or tested Vilafinil ourselves, and nobody paid us to review it.

Who is Centurion Laboratories?
Centurion is the Indian manufacturer Afinil credits for three of its products: Vilafinil (modafinil 200 mg), Modavinil (modafinil 200 mg) and Armodavinil (armodafinil 150 mg). If you've already tried Armodavinil, Vilafinil is the same company's modafinil. We cover the armodafinil version in our Armodavinil 150 mg review.
Beyond that, there isn't much public, verifiable information about Centurion in English, which is common for smaller Indian generic makers. Treat any claim you see about its factories or certifications as unverified unless it links to a regulator's record.
What Afinil's page gets right, and wrong
Afinil's description is mostly standard modafinil copy. Some of it lines up with the official label; some of it doesn't.
Consistent with the label:
- One 200 mg tablet a day.
- Taken in the morning for narcolepsy and obstructive sleep apnea, or about an hour before a shift for shift work disorder.
- Can be taken with or without food.
- A long half-life, which is why a second dose in the same day is a bad idea.
Not consistent with the label:
- Insomnia. The page lists insomnia among the conditions Vilafinil treats. Modafinil isn't approved for insomnia; it's a wakefulness drug, and insomnia appears on its label as a side effect.
- "OTC." The page calls Vilafinil over-the-counter. In the US, modafinil is a prescription-only medicine and a Schedule IV controlled substance, so no version of it is legally sold over the counter.
- "Just as effective as the brand." That may well be true of a properly made generic, but we haven't seen independent testing of Vilafinil, so we can't confirm it.
The page does make one fair point: generics share the active ingredient but can use different fillers, which is one reason people report small differences between brands.
Listed prices
On October 22, 2026, Vilafinil used Afinil's standard price ladder, capped at 500 tablets:
| Pack | Listed price | Per tablet |
|---|---|---|
| 10 tablets | $39 | $3.99 |
| 20 tablets | $69 | $3.49 |
| 30 tablets | $89 | $2.99 |
| 50 tablets | $119 | $2.39 |
| 100 tablets | $199 | $1.99 |
| 200 tablets | $349 | $1.69 |
| 300 tablets | $499 | $1.66 |
| 500 tablets | $799 | $1.59 |
Two things stand out. First, Vilafinil costs the same as Modalert and ModaXL at every size up to 500. Second, it doesn't drop to the cheaper budget ladder that HAB Pharma's Modvigil uses, so at 100 tablets Modvigil was listed $30 cheaper. If you're choosing purely on price, Vilafinil isn't the bargain its low profile might suggest.
Afinil advertised 24% off for crypto payments and a store-credit scheme; our bitcoin payment guide and store credit explainer cover both. The cart total is what counts.
How Vilafinil compares with better-known brands
Vilafinil vs Modalert
Same dose, same price at Afinil, different makers. Modalert comes from Sun Pharma, one of India's largest drug companies, and it's by far the more widely discussed of the two. That doesn't make it better, but it does mean there's far more user experience to draw on. If Modalert is ever out of stock, Vilafinil is one of several same-price alternatives at the same strength.
Vilafinil vs ModaXL
ModaXL, from HOF Pharmaceuticals, is the product Afinil features most prominently, and it's on the same price ladder as Vilafinil. Our ModaXL 200 mg review covers it in detail, and our ModaXL vs Modalert page explains how the "premium" brands differ.
Vilafinil vs Modvigil
Modvigil, from HAB Pharma, contains the same 200 mg of modafinil and sits on the cheaper ladder: $29 for 10 tablets against Vilafinil's $39, and $499 for 500 against $799. See our Modvigil vs Modalert and ModaXL vs Modvigil comparisons for how the budget option stacks up.
Vilafinil vs armodafinil
If you find modafinil fades too early in your day, your doctor may suggest armodafinil instead. It's the longer-lasting R form of the same molecule, dosed at 150 mg. Centurion's version is Armodavinil.
How modafinil is taken, per the label
The Provigil label is the reference for any modafinil generic:
- Narcolepsy and obstructive sleep apnea: 200 mg once a day in the morning.
- Shift work disorder: 200 mg about one hour before the shift starts.
- Higher doses: up to 400 mg a day was studied, without consistent evidence of more benefit than 200 mg.
Peak blood levels arrive two to four hours after a dose, and food can delay that by about an hour. The effective half-life is roughly 15 hours. In practical terms: take it early, and don't redose in the afternoon. Our 300 mg vs 200 mg guide explains why bigger doses aren't automatically better.
Side effects and warnings
The most common side effects on the Provigil label include headache, nausea, nervousness, a runny or stuffy nose, back pain, diarrhea, anxiety, insomnia, dizziness and indigestion. Most are mild, but the label also carries important warnings:
- Serious rash: rare, potentially life-threatening skin reactions have been reported. Stop at the first sign of a rash and see a doctor.
- Allergic reactions: facial swelling, hives or trouble breathing need urgent care.
- Psychiatric symptoms: anxiety, mania, delusions, hallucinations or suicidal thoughts have been reported, more often in people with a history of mental illness.
- Heart symptoms: chest pain, palpitations or a racing heart should be checked promptly, especially if you have heart problems.
- Birth control: modafinil can make hormonal contraception less effective during use and for a month after stopping.
- Not a substitute for sleep: the label is clear that modafinil doesn't replace normal sleep, and people should avoid driving or risky tasks until they know how it affects them.
None of this is specific to Vilafinil; it applies to every modafinil product. Read our medical disclaimer and talk to a doctor before taking any of them.
Storing it
Keep the tablets in their original blister strips, at room temperature, away from moisture and out of reach of children. Modafinil is a controlled medicine in the US, so don't share it and don't keep loose tablets in unlabeled containers. Check the expiry date on the strip before each new pack, particularly with larger orders that will last several months, and dispose of unused tablets through a pharmacy take-back scheme where one exists.
Legal notes
- US: Schedule IV controlled substance. Legal with a prescription; importing without one is illegal, and CBP can seize the parcel.
- Prescriptions: a US-licensed doctor, including a telehealth prescriber, can write it for FDA-approved uses such as narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea and shift work disorder. As a Schedule IV drug, a prescription can be refilled up to five times within six months.
- Pharmacy route: generic modafinil is widely stocked at US pharmacies, and discount cards or insurance can bring the cash price down a lot.
Afinil's reship policy covers seized or lost parcels on its terms, but it doesn't change the law. Our legal notes and online doctor guide cover the legal route.
Buying Vilafinil sensibly
- Get medical advice first. Excessive sleepiness can be a sign of a sleep disorder that needs diagnosis.
- Start with 10 tablets. With only a handful of reviews to go on, a small first order is the sensible way to see how it suits you.
- Choose tracked shipping if you want to follow the parcel; our US domestic USPS shipping review covers delivery.
- Check the strips on arrival: Centurion's name, Vilafinil 200 or modafinil 200 mg, a batch number and a future expiry date.
- Keep your order emails in case you need the reshipment policy.
What we couldn't verify
Being upfront about the gaps matters more for a lesser-known brand, so here's what we looked for and didn't find:
- Independent lab tests. We found no published third-party assay of Vilafinil tablets. That isn't evidence of a problem, just an absence of evidence either way.
- A regulator listing we could check. We didn't find an English-language Indian regulator record for Vilafinil that we could link to. Afinil's page names the maker but doesn't link to one either.
- Many user reports. Afinil showed six reviews when we checked, which is too few to draw conclusions from. Reviews on a seller's own site are also selected by the seller.
- Inactive ingredients. Afinil's listing doesn't name the fillers or coating. If you have allergies or intolerances, that's worth knowing before you buy, and the printed leaflet (if one is included) is the place to check.
For a standard reference point, India's official pharmacopoeia requires modafinil tablets to contain between 90% and 110% of the labeled amount. A properly made 200 mg tablet from any licensed maker should fall in that range, but only testing can confirm a particular batch does.
Who might choose Vilafinil?
- Someone who has used Centurion's Armodavinil without problems and wants the modafinil version.
- Someone looking for a same-price backup if Modalert is out of stock.
- Someone who simply wants to try a different maker's tablet after speaking to their doctor.
Who probably shouldn't: anyone choosing mainly on price (Modvigil and generic modafinil cost less), and anyone who wants a brand with a long public track record.
Verdict
Vilafinil 200 mg is a straightforward modafinil generic from Centurion Laboratories, priced like the premium brands at Afinil and capped at 500-tablet packs. Nothing we found marks it out as better or worse than Modalert or ModaXL; there's simply less public information about it. If you have a prescription and want to try it, buy a small pack, check the strips and take it early. If saving money is the goal, a budget-ladder brand does the same job for less.
FAQ
What is Vilafinil 200 mg?
A generic version of Provigil made by Centurion Laboratories in India. Each tablet contains 200 mg of modafinil, according to Afinil.
Who makes Vilafinil?
Centurion Laboratories, according to Afinil's product page. Afinil also lists Centurion as the maker of Modavinil and Armodavinil.
How much does Vilafinil cost at Afinil?
On October 22, 2026, Afinil listed it from $39 for 10 tablets ($3.99 each) to $799 for 500 ($1.59 each). No 1,000-tablet pack was offered. Check the cart for current prices.
Is Vilafinil as strong as Modalert?
Both contain 200 mg of modafinil, so the dose is the same. Fillers and coatings differ between makers. We're not aware of independent tests comparing the two.
Does Vilafinil treat insomnia?
No. Afinil's page lists insomnia among the conditions it treats, but that's wrong: modafinil is approved for excessive sleepiness from narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea and shift work disorder, and insomnia is one of its common side effects.
How long does Vilafinil last?
The Provigil label gives modafinil an effective half-life of about 15 hours, with peak levels two to four hours after a dose. Taking it late in the day can disturb sleep.
Do I need a prescription for Vilafinil?
Yes. Modafinil is a Schedule IV controlled substance in the US, so you need a valid prescription from a US-licensed prescriber. Importing it without one isn't legal, and CBP can seize the parcel at the border.
Is Vilafinil good value?
It's priced like the premium brands (Modalert, ModaXL) rather than the budget ones (Modvigil, generic modafinil). If price is your main concern, a budget-ladder tablet costs less for the same dose.
Can I try Vilafinil before buying a full pack?
Afinil runs a separate free-samples offer, but the brands included vary. The smallest Vilafinil pack is 10 tablets.
