ArmodaXL versus modafinil comparison
ArmodaXL 150 mg vs a 200 mg modafinil such as ModaXL, from labels and Afinil listings checked October 2026

ArmodaXL vs modafinil is a common question from people who already know modafinil and see Afinil's armodafinil house brand sitting right next to it. They look similar, cost the same per tablet at Afinil, and come from the same maker. So which one makes sense, and what actually changes if you switch?

We haven't tested either product. Facts below come from the US prescribing information for Nuvigil (armodafinil) and Provigil (modafinil), plus Afinil's listings for ArmodaXL 150 mg and ModaXL 200 mg, checked on October 29, 2026. What ArmodaXL actually is

ArmodaXL is a brand of armodafinil sold by Afinil as its house brand. Afinil says it's made by HOF Pharmaceuticals in India, the same maker it names for ModaXL. It comes as a 150 mg tablet.

Armodafinil is one half of the modafinil molecule. Modafinil is a 50/50 mix of two mirror-image forms, called the R and S forms. The R form stays in the body much longer. The S form clears within a few hours. Armodafinil is the R form on its own.

So comparing ArmodaXL with modafinil isn't comparing two unrelated drugs. It's comparing a purified, longer-acting part of a molecule with the original mix.

Dose: why 150 mg versus 200 mg

People sometimes assume 150 mg must be weaker than 200 mg. It isn't that simple. Because armodafinil is only the long-acting form, a smaller dose covers similar ground. The Nuvigil label lists 150 mg once daily for narcolepsy and shift work disorder and 150 mg or 250 mg for obstructive sleep apnea. The Provigil label lists 200 mg once daily for all three.

So "stronger" is true milligram for milligram, and roughly beside the point at the doses doctors actually prescribe. Don't try to work out your own conversion. If you're switching, your prescriber sets the dose.

Timing: the real practical difference

The most useful difference is how the two behave across a day.

The Nuvigil label says armodafinil produces higher blood levels later in the day than modafinil, compared on a milligram basis. That makes sense once you know modafinil's short-lived S half fades early, while armodafinil is all R form.

In practice, for someone prescribed one of these, that could mean:

  • ArmodaXL: a longer tail into the afternoon and evening. Helpful if a long day is the goal, unhelpful if sleep is already hard.
  • Modafinil: a curve that drops off a bit sooner, which some people find easier on their sleep.

Food matters too. The Nuvigil label says a meal can push armodafinil's peak back by 2 to 4 hours. Take it with a big breakfast and the peak may not arrive until early afternoon, stretching the evening tail further. Modafinil's peak is delayed by about an hour with food.

Here's a made-up example to show the idea, not a dosing plan. Two people take their prescribed tablet at 8 AM with breakfast. The one on armodafinil may still have relatively higher levels at 9 PM than the one on modafinil, and may find falling asleep harder. That's an illustration of what the label describes, not a measurement.

Afinil's claims about ArmodaXL

Afinil says ArmodaXL kicks in faster and offers "up to 30% stronger peak effects" thanks to changes in the inactive ingredients. It makes similar claims for ModaXL. We couldn't find independent data supporting either claim. No published study we know of compares ArmodaXL with other armodafinil brands or with modafinil, so we'd treat those lines as marketing.

What we can say is that both are sold as the labeled strength of the same family of drug. Differences people report between brands usually come down to fillers, coatings, timing, food and expectations.

Side effects: mostly the same list

Because they're the same family, the side effect lists overlap heavily. Both labels name headache, nausea, dizziness and insomnia among the common ones. Both warn about rare but serious skin reactions, allergic reactions and psychiatric symptoms. If you develop a rash, hives, blistering, mouth sores or trouble breathing, stop and get medical help right away.

The one difference worth flagging is sleep. Because armodafinil stays higher later in the day, a late or food-delayed dose is more likely to cut into the night. If insomnia is already a problem, that's a conversation to have with your prescriber.

Price: what you'd actually pay at Afinil

On October 29, 2026, ArmodaXL 150 mg and ModaXL 200 mg used identical price ladders at Afinil:

PackArmodaXL 150 mgModaXL 200 mg
10 tablets$3.99 each$3.99 each
30 tablets$2.99 each$2.99 each
50 tablets$2.39 each$2.39 each
100 tablets$1.99 each$1.99 each
500 tablets$1.59 each$1.59 each
1,000 tablets$1.09 each$1.09 each

So there's no price reason to pick one over the other. If cost is the priority, HAB Pharma's plain generic armodafinil 150 mg was cheaper, at $1.69 a tablet for 100 and $0.89 for 1,000. Our best armodafinil brand guide compares all the brands.

Which one fits which situation?

This is a decision for you and your prescriber, but these are the questions that usually decide it:

  • Do you need coverage late into the day? Armodafinil's longer tail may suit long shifts better.
  • Is your sleep already fragile? Modafinil's earlier drop-off may be gentler.
  • Has modafinil worked well already? Then there may be no reason to switch.
  • Do you like one maker for both? ArmodaXL and ModaXL come from the same maker, according to Afinil, which keeps that variable constant if your doctor wants you to try both.

Neither drug is FDA-approved for studying, general focus or productivity. They're approved for narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea and shift work disorder.

US legal notes

Armodafinil and modafinil are both Schedule IV controlled substances in the US and need a valid prescription from a licensed US prescriber. ArmodaXL and ModaXL aren't FDA-approved products. Ordering either from overseas without a prescription isn't a legal route, and customs can seize parcels. Our guide to whether buying modafinil is legal explains more, and our online prescription guide covers the legitimate routes.

The bottom line

ArmodaXL vs modafinil comes down to timing more than strength. ArmodaXL is Afinil's 150 mg armodafinil, the long-acting half of modafinil, and it keeps blood levels higher later in the day than a 200 mg modafinil like ModaXL. That can stretch coverage, and it can just as easily hurt sleep. At Afinil they cost exactly the same per tablet and come from the same maker, and the "stronger peak" claims are unverified marketing. FAQ

Is ArmodaXL the same as modafinil?

No, but they're closely related. ArmodaXL contains armodafinil, which is the longer-lasting R form of the modafinil molecule. Modafinil is a mix of the R and S forms.

Is ArmodaXL stronger than modafinil?

Milligram for milligram, yes, because armodafinil is only the long-acting form. That's why it comes as 150 mg against 200 mg for modafinil. At their usual doses they're meant to do the same job.

Does ArmodaXL last longer than modafinil?

The US Nuvigil label says armodafinil gives higher blood levels later in the day than modafinil on a milligram basis. That can mean a longer tail, and a higher chance of trouble sleeping if taken late.

Is ArmodaXL more expensive than ModaXL?

Not at Afinil when we checked on October 29, 2026. Both used the same ladder: $3.99 a tablet for 10, $1.99 for 100 and $1.09 for 1,000.

Who makes ArmodaXL?

Afinil says ArmodaXL is made by HOF Pharmaceuticals in India, the same maker it names for its ModaXL line.

Is the "30% stronger peak" claim true?

We found no independent data supporting it. It's Afinil's marketing claim about inactive-ingredient tweaks, not a finding from published research.

Can I switch from modafinil to ArmodaXL?

Only with your prescriber's guidance. The dose isn't one-for-one, and timing matters because armodafinil stays higher later in the day.

Is it legal to buy ArmodaXL in the US?

Armodafinil is a Schedule IV controlled substance in the US and needs a valid prescription. ArmodaXL isn't an FDA-approved product, and importing it without a prescription isn't a legal route.
