Modavinil vs ModaXL: Which 200 mg Modafinil Makes More Sense?

· · Fact-checked November 2026 · How we review

Modavinil vs ModaXL comparison chart
Key differences between Modavinil and ModaXL, from Afinil's listings on October 31, 2026

Modavinil and ModaXL are two of the most common 200 mg modafinil brands on Afinil, and from a buyer's point of view they look almost the same: same drug, same strength, same price per tablet. That makes the choice harder, not easier. If price can't decide it, what can?

This comparison is based on Afinil's Modavinil 200 mg and ModaXL 200 mg listings as they appeared on October 31, 2026, and on the US prescribing information for Provigil, the original modafinil brand. We didn't take, test or lab-check either tablet. Nothing here is medical advice; your prescriber is the right person to decide whether modafinil suits you and at what dose. We may earn a commission when you buy through our Afinil links, at no extra cost to you.

Modavinil vs ModaXL: the quick verdict

  • Same drug, same dose: both are listed as 200 mg modafinil.
  • Same price: every international pack size had an identical price per tablet when we checked.
  • Different makers: Centurion Laboratories for Modavinil, HOF Pharmaceuticals for ModaXL, per Afinil.
  • More feedback for ModaXL: 21 reviews on its listing vs 6 for Modavinil, both averaging 4.8 out of 5.
  • Faster US delivery for ModaXL: it has a domestic US version. Modavinil doesn't.

For most US buyers, ModaXL is the more practical choice because of the domestic option and the larger number of reviews. Modavinil is a fair alternative if you're ordering international stock anyway and want a second maker on hand.

What each tablet is

Modavinil 200 mg is a modafinil tablet that Afinil lists as made by Centurion Laboratories. Afinil has sold it for less time than its older brands, and the listing carries only six reviews. Our full Modavinil 200 mg review goes into the brand's background.

ModaXL 200 mg is the modafinil tablet in the HOF Pharmaceuticals line Afinil sells under its own branding, alongside ArmodaXL and the higher-strength ModaXL tablets. It has a longer run on the store and more reviews. See our ModaXL 200 mg review for more.

Both makers are Indian generic manufacturers. Neither tablet is FDA-approved, and neither is sold in US pharmacies. The only FDA-approved modafinil products in the US are Provigil and its approved generics.

Prices: the full ladder

The international price ladder was identical for the two brands on October 31, 2026:

Pack sizeModavinil per tabletModaXL per tablet
10$3.99$3.99
20$3.49$3.49
30$2.99$2.99
50$2.39$2.39
100$1.99$1.99
200$1.69$1.69
300$1.66$1.66
500$1.59$1.59
1,000$1.09$1.09

Orders over $130 qualify for free shipping, and the site advertises a discount for paying with Bitcoin. Prices move around, so treat these as a snapshot.

One caution: both product pages contain marketing text that doesn't match the dropdown. The Modavinil page mentions prices "as low as $0.89," and the ModaXL text mentions figures like $0.89 for 500 and $1.69 for 100. The prices you can actually select in the quantity menu were the ones in the table above. Go by the dropdown and the cart total, not the description text.

ModaXL's domestic US option

This is the clearest practical difference. Afinil sells a separate "ModaXL 200 mg Domestic US Shipping" product, which it says ships from inside the US by USPS Priority Mail. The listing describes up to 24 hours of processing, then about 3 to 4 business days in transit.

That convenience costs extra. On October 31, 2026, the domestic version was priced like this:

Pack sizeDomestic ModaXL per tablet
60$5.99
100$4.99
200$4.49
300$3.66
500$3.39
1,000$2.99

At 100 tablets, that's $4.99 each against $1.99 for the international stock of either brand, about two and a half times as much. Whether that premium is worth it depends on how soon you need the order and how much you value avoiding an international parcel. Our review of Afinil's domestic USPS shipping explains how that service works.

Modavinil has no domestic version on Afinil, so it always comes from international stock.

Claims we couldn't verify

Both listings include promises that go beyond what a 200 mg modafinil tablet can be shown to do.

On the ModaXL page:

  • "5% higher absorption" and "30% stronger peak effects" than other brands.
  • Aluminum packaging said to keep tablets fresh for up to three years.
  • A "U.S.P." standard on the label.

On the Modavinil page:

  • Dispatch "within 2 hours."
  • A statement that Modalert and Waklert won't be available because of legal problems at their maker.
  • An FAQ answer saying effects "may last 66 to 82.5 hours."

We couldn't find published evidence for the ModaXL absorption and peak claims. The packaging and USP statements may be accurate, but we have no way to confirm them. On the Modavinil side, we couldn't confirm the Modalert supply claim from an independent source. The 66 to 82.5 hour figure looks like a mix-up with how long the drug takes to clear the body completely. It doesn't describe how long anyone stays alert, and it doesn't match the Provigil label.

None of these points makes either tablet bad. They're simply reasons to judge both brands on the facts you can check: the drug, the dose, the price, the review count and the delivery route.

What the Provigil label says about modafinil

Because both tablets carry the same drug, the official label applies to both equally.

  • Dose: 200 mg once a day in the morning for narcolepsy and obstructive sleep apnea. For shift work disorder, 200 mg about an hour before the shift.
  • Higher doses: the label says doses up to 400 mg a day have been well tolerated, but there's no consistent evidence they give more benefit than 200 mg.
  • Timing of effect: peak levels about 2 to 4 hours after a dose. Food can delay this by about an hour.
  • Duration: effective half-life of about 15 hours after repeated doses. That's why a morning dose is the norm, and why late doses can disturb sleep.
  • Common side effects: headache, nausea, nervousness, anxiety and trouble sleeping, among others.
  • Serious warnings: rare but serious rash, allergic reactions, and psychiatric symptoms. Stop and get medical help if you develop a rash or swelling.
  • Before starting: tell your prescriber and pharmacist about every medicine and supplement you take, and about any heart, liver or mental health history.

Since the drug is identical, any difference you might feel between Modavinil and ModaXL is more likely to come from timing, food, sleep or expectation than from the brand. Our guide to how long modafinil takes to kick in covers the timing side.

Makers and track record

With no price gap, the maker's history is one of the few things that separates these brands.

HOF Pharmaceuticals (ModaXL) is the company Afinil names behind its whole XL range: ModaXL in several strengths and ArmodaXL. That range has been sold on Afinil for longer, which shows up in the review counts across those products.

Centurion Laboratories (Modavinil) also makes Armodavinil, the armodafinil brand Afinil pairs with Modavinil in a combination pack. It's a newer addition to the store, and six reviews isn't much to go on.

Neither maker publishes the kind of batch testing data you'd get from an FDA-regulated product. If that matters to you, the FDA-approved generic modafinil from a US pharmacy, with a prescription, is the only option that gives it.

Reading the review numbers fairly

ModaXL's 21 reviews and Modavinil's 6 both average 4.8. It's tempting to call that a tie, but the sample sizes are very different, and both sets are collected by the seller. A handful of reviews can swing an average a long way.

More useful than the star rating is what reviewers say about delivery and how the strip looked on arrival. Those are the parts a buyer can actually report on. Claims about a tablet feeling "stronger" are hard to separate from dose timing, sleep and caffeine.

Which one to pick

Pick ModaXL 200 mg if:

  • you want the domestic US option and can accept the higher price for it;
  • you'd rather go with the brand that has more buyer feedback;
  • you already use ArmodaXL or another HOF product and want to stay with one maker.

Pick Modavinil 200 mg if:

  • you're ordering international stock anyway, where the price is identical;
  • you're interested in the Modavinil and Armodavinil pairing from the same maker;
  • you'd like a second modafinil brand to compare against one you already use.

Consider neither if:

  • you have a prescription and insurance that covers generic modafinil at a US pharmacy, which is usually simpler and fully legal;
  • you've had a rash or allergic reaction to modafinil or armodafinil before;
  • you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have heart, liver or mental health conditions you haven't discussed with a doctor.

If you're weighing other pairs, our ModaXL vs Modalert comparison and ModaXL vs Modvigil for focus cover ModaXL against two older brands.

A cost example for a typical month

These numbers are an example only, not a recommendation to take modafinil daily. Suppose a prescriber recommends 200 mg on 20 workdays a month.

  • International Modavinil or ModaXL, 100 tablets: about $199, enough for roughly five months at that rate, or about $40 a month.
  • Domestic ModaXL, 100 tablets: about $499 for the same five months, or roughly $100 a month.
  • 10-tablet trial pack of either brand: about $40, useful for checking the product and delivery before committing.

The gap between the two brands is zero. The gap between international and domestic delivery is the real cost decision.

US legal and prescription notes

Modafinil is a Schedule IV controlled substance under US federal law. You need a valid prescription from a licensed US prescriber to possess it legally. Modavinil and ModaXL are not FDA-approved, and both product pages suggest they can be bought without a prescription, which doesn't reflect US law. Importing a controlled medicine without a prescription isn't a legal route, and customs can seize parcels. A domestic shipping option doesn't change that.

Our guide to whether buying modafinil is legal covers the rules in more detail, and our page on modafinil cost without insurance compares US pharmacy prices.

Checking either brand when it arrives

  1. Read the strip. It should name modafinil 200 mg and the maker shown on the listing: Centurion for Modavinil, HOF for ModaXL.
  2. Check the expiry date and that the foil is intact.
  3. Compare with your order. The quantity and product should match your confirmation email.
  4. Keep it secure and out of reach of others. Sharing a controlled substance isn't legal.
  5. Stop and get help if you notice a rash, swelling, chest pain, or a sudden change in mood.

Mistakes buyers make when choosing between them

Paying for "strength" that isn't there. Both tablets hold 200 mg of modafinil. A listing that calls one brand stronger is making a marketing claim, not describing a different dose.

Buying the biggest pack first. The 1,000-tablet price looks attractive at $1.09 each, but that's more than $1,000 up front for a product you haven't tried. A 10-tablet or 30-tablet order lets you check the strip, the delivery time and how you get on with it.

Mixing up domestic and international listings. The domestic ModaXL product is a separate listing with its own prices. Check which one is in your cart before paying, because the per-tablet gap is large.

Taking it late in the day. With a half-life of around 15 hours, an afternoon dose can still be active at bedtime. The label's morning dosing applies to both brands.

Raising the dose to "test" a brand. If a brand seems weaker, the answer isn't to take two. The label found no consistent extra benefit above 200 mg, and side effects become more likely. Talk to your prescriber instead.

Ignoring the fine print on legality. A vendor page saying no prescription is needed doesn't make it legal in the US. That applies equally to both brands.

Final verdict

Modavinil and ModaXL are the same drug at the same dose and, on international stock, the same price to the cent. ModaXL comes out slightly ahead for US buyers because it has more reviews and a domestic shipping option, even though that option costs a lot more per tablet. Modavinil is a reasonable alternative from a different maker, with fewer reviews and a couple of listing claims that don't hold up.

Neither tablet's marketing claims should drive the choice. Decide on delivery route, maker preference and budget, and make sure a prescriber has agreed that modafinil is right for you.

FAQ

Is Modavinil the same as ModaXL?

Both are listed as 200 mg modafinil tablets, so the active drug and amount are the same. They come from different makers: Afinil names Centurion Laboratories for Modavinil and HOF Pharmaceuticals for ModaXL. Inactive ingredients, packaging and batch history differ.

Which is cheaper, Modavinil or ModaXL?

Neither. On October 31, 2026, both showed the same ladder at Afinil: $3.99 a tablet for 10, $1.99 for 100, $1.59 for 500 and $1.09 for 1,000. ModaXL's separate domestic US version costs more, starting at $5.99 a tablet for 60.

Is ModaXL stronger than Modavinil?

Afinil's ModaXL page claims higher absorption and stronger peak effects than other brands, but we couldn't find a published study or independent test supporting that. Both tablets are labelled 200 mg modafinil.

Which one ships faster to the US?

ModaXL has a domestic US option that Afinil says ships by USPS Priority Mail in about 3 to 4 business days after processing. Modavinil is sold only from the international stock, which usually takes longer.

How long do Modavinil and ModaXL last?

The drug is the same, so duration is the same. The US Provigil label puts modafinil's effective half-life at about 15 hours after repeated doses, with peak levels 2 to 4 hours after a dose. One Afinil FAQ line claiming effects can last 66 to 82.5 hours isn't consistent with the label.

Can I switch from ModaXL to Modavinil?

They contain the same drug at the same strength, so many people treat them as interchangeable. Still, tell your prescriber and pharmacist if you change brands, and watch for any difference in how you feel.

Do I need a prescription for Modavinil or ModaXL?

Yes, in the US. Modafinil is a Schedule IV controlled substance that needs a valid prescription. Neither brand is FDA-approved, and importing them without a prescription isn't a legal route.

Which should I pick?

If you want faster US delivery or the brand with more reviews, ModaXL is the easier pick. If you're happy with international shipping and want a second maker to compare against, Modavinil costs the same.
