How Much Does Modafinil Cost Without Insurance?

· · Fact-checked October 2026 · How we review

What US pharmacies paid per tablet in October 2026
Average pharmacy acquisition cost per tablet from the CMS NADAC survey (not a retail price)

If you're paying cash for modafinil, the number you get quoted can be confusing. One pharmacy says one thing, another says something very different, and the brand name Provigil can cost more than a car payment. This guide sets out what we could verify about modafinil cost without insurance in the US in October 2026, explains why cash prices vary so much, and shows how online imports compare. It isn't medical or legal advice, and a doctor decides whether modafinil is right for you.

The short answer

  • Generic modafinil is cheap to make and stock. The federal NADAC survey put the average pharmacy acquisition cost at about $0.35 per 200 mg tablet and about $0.25 per 100 mg tablet (data as of October 21, 2026).
  • Brand Provigil is expensive. The same survey showed pharmacies paying about $80.25 per 200 mg tablet and $53.18 per 100 mg tablet.
  • Your cash price isn't the acquisition cost. Pharmacies add a markup and a dispensing fee, and cash prices for the same bottle can differ a lot between stores.
  • A prescription is required either way. Modafinil is a Schedule IV controlled substance in the US.

Where these numbers come from

We don't publish pharmacy shelf prices we can't check. Instead, this page uses the National Average Drug Acquisition Cost (NADAC) dataset that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) publishes on data.medicaid.gov. CMS surveys retail pharmacies and reports the average price they paid wholesalers for each drug, per unit. We pulled the 2026 file on October 22, 2026, using the most recent entries for each strength.

NADAC is useful for one thing: it tells you roughly what the drug costs the pharmacy. If a cash quote is many times that number, you know most of it is markup and fees. If a quote is close to it, you're probably getting a good deal.

What NADAC doesn't tell you:

  • the price a specific store charges a cash customer
  • dispensing fees, which differ by pharmacy
  • the discount-card price, which depends on deals between card companies and pharmacies

Generic modafinil: what pharmacies paid

StrengthAvg. acquisition cost per tabletExample: 30 tablets
Generic modafinil 100 mgabout $0.25about $7.62
Generic modafinil 200 mgabout $0.35about $10.58

The 30-tablet column is simple example math (per-tablet cost times 30). It isn't a price you'll be charged. Still, it shows why a cash quote of several hundred dollars for generic modafinil is worth questioning.

Brand Provigil: what pharmacies paid

StrengthAvg. acquisition cost per tabletExample: 30 tablets
Provigil 100 mgabout $53.18about $1,595.45
Provigil 200 mgabout $80.25about $2,407.60

Brand Provigil and generic modafinil have the same active ingredient. FDA-approved generics have to match the brand's active ingredient, strength and dosage form, and show they deliver the drug to the body in an equivalent way. Unless your prescriber has a specific reason to write "brand medically necessary," the generic is the obvious cash choice.

Why cash prices vary so much

If the drug costs the pharmacy 35 cents a tablet, why do cash quotes vary so widely? A few reasons:

  1. Usual and customary prices. Many pharmacies set a list "cash" price that's much higher than what insured customers or discount-card users pay.
  2. Dispensing fees. Every fill carries the cost of the pharmacist's time, checks and overhead. On a cheap generic, the fee can be most of the bill.
  3. Controlled-substance handling. Schedule IV drugs come with extra record-keeping and limits on refills and transfers, which some stores price in.
  4. Discount programs. Cards and store programs negotiate their own prices, so the "same" bottle can have several prices at one counter.
  5. Stock and package size. Stores buy different bottle sizes from different makers, and that changes their cost.

None of this is a scam. It's just how US retail pricing works, and it's why asking for the price matters.

How to find the lowest cash price for your prescription

  1. Ask for the generic. Say "generic modafinil, [strength], [number] tablets" so you're quoted the right product.
  2. Call at least three pharmacies. Big chains, grocery-store pharmacies, warehouse clubs and independents can all price differently.
  3. Ask two questions: "What's your cash price?" and "What's the price with a discount card you accept?"
  4. Compare 30-day and 90-day fills. If your prescriber writes for a larger quantity, the per-tablet price is sometimes lower. Federal rules limit refills on Schedule IV drugs, so plan this with your prescriber.
  5. Check mail-order pharmacies. Some US mail-order pharmacies fill controlled substances; others don't. Ask before you transfer anything.

What about CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Costco and Cost Plus?

People often search for a specific store, like "modafinil cost at CVS." We don't list chain prices because we can't verify them, and they change often. The method above works at any store: call, give the exact strength and count, and ask for both the cash and discount-card price.

On Cost Plus Drugs: when we searched its public price list on October 22, 2026, it returned no modafinil or armodafinil, and none of the other controlled drugs we searched came up either. That may change, so check its site if you're interested.

Example monthly cost (illustration only)

Here's an example of how to estimate a monthly budget. These are example numbers, not quotes:

  • Pharmacy acquisition cost for 30 generic 200 mg tablets: about $10.58
  • Add an example dispensing fee and markup of $10 to $30
  • Example cash total: roughly $20 to $40 a month

Your real price could be lower with a good discount card or much higher at a store with a high list price. The point of the math is to give you a sense of what a fair quote looks like, not to promise one.

How online imports compare

Sites such as Afinil ship Indian-made modafinil tablets from overseas. When we checked Afinil on October 22, 2026, ModaXL 200 mg (made by HOF Pharmaceuticals, per the listing) was priced like this:

Pack sizePrice per tabletPack total
10 tablets$3.99$39.90
30 tablets$2.99$89.70
100 tablets$1.99$199.00
300 tablets$1.66$498.00
1,000 tablets$1.09$1,090.00

Some budget brands on the same site started lower, around $2.99 a tablet in 10-packs. Prices can change, so check the live page before you rely on them.

Two honest takeaways:

  • Per tablet, imports aren't cheaper than US generic modafinil. Even Afinil's biggest pack works out to more per tablet than the US generic acquisition cost. A US prescription filled at a fairly priced pharmacy can be the cheaper option.
  • Imports aren't FDA-approved products. Indian export brands aren't FDA-approved, aren't checked by US regulators, and modafinil still needs a prescription in the US. Customs can seize controlled-substance imports. Our legal notes explain the risks.

What about 100 mg tablets?

Per tablet, generic 100 mg cost pharmacies a little less than 200 mg in the NADAC data (about $0.25 vs $0.35). Per milligram, the 200 mg tablet was cheaper. Don't change your strength to save money without asking your prescriber. The FDA label sets the dose, and the dose is a medical decision, not a pricing one.

Ways to lower the cost without cutting corners

  • Get a prescription you can fill in the US. A licensed telehealth or in-person doctor can decide whether modafinil fits your situation. See our guide to getting a modafinil prescription from an online doctor.
  • Use the generic. It's the single biggest saving.
  • Shop around every few months. Cash prices drift.
  • Ask about patient assistance only for brand products. Brand manufacturers sometimes run programs, but terms change; check directly with the manufacturer.
  • Don't buy from unknown sellers to save a few dollars. Counterfeit and mislabeled tablets are a real risk with controlled drugs sold online.

Safety notes

Price shouldn't decide whether you take modafinil. The Provigil label lists warnings about serious rash, allergic reactions and psychiatric symptoms, and some people shouldn't take it. Talk to a doctor or pharmacist about your health history before you start, and read our medical disclaimer.

Buying modafinil in the US

Modafinil is a Schedule IV controlled substance in the US. It's legal to buy with a valid prescription from a licensed pharmacy. Buying it without one can break federal and state law, and imported shipments can be seized. Our legal notes cover this in more detail.

Verdict

Without insurance, generic modafinil shouldn't cost a fortune. US pharmacies paid about 35 cents per 200 mg tablet in October 2026, so a fair cash price for a month's supply is usually modest, while brand Provigil costs thousands. Get a prescription, ask for the generic, and call around. If you're comparing imports, know they cost more per tablet than US generic stock, aren't FDA-approved, and still need a prescription under US law.

FAQ

How much does modafinil cost without insurance?

It depends on the pharmacy. US pharmacies paid an average of about $0.35 per generic 200 mg tablet in October 2026 according to the CMS NADAC survey, so the drug itself is inexpensive. Cash prices add markup and dispensing fees and vary widely, so call two or three pharmacies and ask.

How much does brand Provigil cost without insurance?

Brand Provigil is far more expensive. The same NADAC survey showed pharmacies paying about $80 per 200 mg tablet and about $53 per 100 mg tablet, which puts a month of brand tablets in the thousands of dollars before any markup.

Is generic modafinil cheaper than Provigil?

Yes, by a wide margin. Generic modafinil and brand Provigil contain the same active ingredient, and the acquisition cost gap in the October 2026 data was more than 200 to 1.

What does modafinil cost at CVS or Walgreens?

We don't quote store prices we can't verify, and chain cash prices change often. Call the store, give the strength and tablet count, and ask for the cash price and the price with any discount card they accept.

Does Cost Plus Drugs sell modafinil?

When we searched the Cost Plus Drugs price list on October 22, 2026, it returned no modafinil or armodafinil listings, and none of the other controlled drugs we searched came up either.

What is NADAC?

NADAC stands for National Average Drug Acquisition Cost. It is a weekly CMS survey of what retail pharmacies pay to buy drugs. It's a useful floor, not the price you'll pay at the counter.

Is buying modafinil online without a prescription cheaper?

Imported tablets from sites like Afinil run from about $1 to $4 per tablet depending on pack size, which is more per tablet than the US generic acquisition cost. Modafinil is a Schedule IV controlled drug in the US and needs a prescription; read our legal notes first.

Does 100 mg cost less than 200 mg?

Per tablet, generic 100 mg was slightly cheaper to acquire in the October 2026 data (about $0.25 vs $0.35), but per milligram the 200 mg tablet was cheaper. Your dose is your prescriber's call, not a pricing decision.
