Modafinil tablet standards: IP vs USP
Key requirements for modafinil tablets in the Indian and US pharmacopoeias

Look closely at a modafinil box or a vendor's product details and you might see "IP" or "USP" after the drug name. Forum threads ask whether one is better, and some sellers treat the letters as a selling point. They're actually references to two official pharmacopoeias, the books that define what a medicine must contain and how it must be tested. For modafinil tablets, we compared the two standards directly.

Our sources are the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission's modafinil tablets monograph and the United States Pharmacopeia's modafinil tablets monograph, both checked on October 22, 2026. We aren't a testing lab, and we haven't analyzed any product.

What a pharmacopoeia is

A pharmacopoeia is a country's official set of quality standards for medicines. For each drug, a monograph sets out:

  • Identity: tests that confirm the tablet really contains the named drug.
  • Content: how close the actual amount must be to the amount on the label.
  • Performance: for tablets, how quickly the drug must dissolve.
  • Purity and uniformity: limits on impurities and on variation between tablets.

Manufacturers test batches against these standards, and regulators can check that they do. The letters on a label tell you which book the product claims to follow.

IP: the Indian Pharmacopoeia

The Indian Pharmacopoeia is published by the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission, part of India's health ministry. Its modafinil tablets monograph, published in 2018, says:

  • Tablets must contain 90.0% to 110.0% of the stated amount of modafinil.
  • The usual strengths are 100 mg and 200 mg.
  • Identity is confirmed by infrared spectroscopy against a modafinil reference standard.
  • At least 75% of the stated amount must dissolve within 30 minutes in 900 ml of 0.1 molar hydrochloric acid, using the basket apparatus at 50 rpm.

The separate IP monograph for the raw drug substance requires 98.0% to 101.5% purity. Indian firms making modafinil tablets for sale in India are expected to follow IP; some Indian sellers list products such as "Modafinil Tablet IP".

USP: the United States Pharmacopeia

The USP is published by an independent US non-profit, and its standards are enforceable by the FDA for medicines sold in the US. Its modafinil tablets monograph says:

  • Tablets must contain 90.0% to 110.0% of the labeled amount of modafinil.
  • Identity is confirmed by infrared absorption against the USP modafinil reference standard.
  • Under Dissolution Test 1, at least 75% must dissolve within 30 minutes in 900 ml of 0.1 N hydrochloric acid, using the paddle apparatus at 50 rpm.
  • Additional dissolution tests exist for products whose labeling says they meet them.
  • Tablets must meet USP's uniformity of dosage units requirements.

On the numbers that matter most to a patient, how much drug is in the tablet and how quickly it's released, the two standards ask for essentially the same thing. The differences are in testing details, not in what a compliant tablet delivers.

What neither label can promise

This is the part sellers leave out. A pharmacopoeia standard is only as good as the system checking it:

  • A label is a claim. Printing "IP" or "USP" doesn't prove a batch was tested.
  • Enforcement is local. The FDA enforces USP standards on products sold in US pharmacies. Tablets imported from an overseas vendor haven't gone through that.
  • Counterfeits copy labels. A fake can carry any letters it likes.
  • Inactive ingredients differ. Neither monograph dictates the fillers, coatings or dyes a maker uses.

So "USP" on a tablet bought from an export vendor doesn't carry the same weight as "USP" on a bottle from your local pharmacy. And "IP" on an Indian brand simply tells you which standard it's meant to follow.

What this means for Indian brands sold abroad

Brands such as ModaXL, Modalert, Modvigil and Modafil MD are Indian products, so the relevant domestic standard is IP. Vendor listings, including Afinil's, often don't mention the standard at all, and we haven't seen published batch tests for any of these brands. Our ModaXL 200 mg review, ModaXL vs Modalert and Modvigil vs Modalert pages cover what's known about each.

If you buy from an export vendor, the practical checks are the same whatever letters appear: a named maker, intact blister strips, a batch number and an expiry date. Our Afinil legitimacy check explains what we look for in a seller, and the reshipment policy page covers what happens if an order goes wrong.

Does dissolution matter for how it feels?

Both standards require most of the drug to dissolve quickly, so a compliant tablet shouldn't feel "slower" because of its standard. The Provigil label says peak blood levels arrive two to four hours after a dose, and food can delay that by about an hour. Those timings matter far more than IP versus USP. If you're curious about faster-dissolving forms, our sublingual Modafil MD review covers the orally disintegrating version.

The legal and medical side

Modafinil is a prescription medicine whatever its standard. In the US it's a Schedule IV controlled substance, and importing it without a prescription is illegal. The surest route to a product that's been held to a standard is a prescription filled at a licensed pharmacy. See our online doctor guide and legal notes.

The same side effects and warnings apply under both standards: common ones include headache, nausea, anxiety and insomnia, and rare serious reactions include severe rashes, allergic reactions, psychiatric symptoms and chest pain. Modafinil can reduce the effect of hormonal birth control. Read our medical disclaimer and talk to a doctor before taking it.

Verdict

For modafinil tablets, IP and USP set nearly identical bars: 90% to 110% of the labeled dose, and at least 75% dissolved in 30 minutes. Neither is "stronger". The real difference is who enforces the standard, and for tablets imported from overseas, nobody in your country has checked the claim. Treat the letters as background information, and judge a product by its source, its packaging and the legal route you're using.

FAQ

What does IP mean on modafinil?

IP stands for Indian Pharmacopoeia, India's official book of drug standards, published by the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission. "Modafinil Tablets IP" means the tablets are meant to meet the IP monograph.

What does USP mean on modafinil?

USP stands for United States Pharmacopeia. A "Modafinil Tablets USP" label means the product is meant to meet the USP monograph, which US regulators can enforce.

Is USP modafinil stronger than IP modafinil?

No. Both standards require tablets to contain between 90.0% and 110.0% of the labeled amount of modafinil, so a 200 mg tablet is 200 mg under either.

Do IP and USP test dissolution the same way?

Very similarly. Both require at least 75% of the drug dissolved in 30 minutes in 0.1 molar hydrochloric acid at 50 rpm, but IP names its basket apparatus while USP's first test uses the paddle. USP also lists alternative tests for some products.

Are Indian modafinil brands IP-standard?

Indian manufacturers making modafinil for the Indian market are expected to meet IP standards, but a brand name alone doesn't tell you that. We haven't tested any brand.

Does a USP label guarantee quality?

It's a claim that the product meets the standard. For US pharmacy products, the FDA can enforce it. For imported tablets, nobody in your country has checked the claim.

Which should I choose?

Choose based on the legal route available to you. In the US, a prescription filled at a licensed pharmacy gives you an FDA-regulated product, whatever the label says.
