Vilafinil 200 vs Modvigil 200: Which Modafinil Should You Pick?
On paper, Vilafinil 200 and Modvigil 200 are the same thing: a 200 mg modafinil tablet from an Indian generic maker, sold online by export vendors such as Afinil. In practice they differ in price, pack sizes, maker and how much buyer feedback exists. If you're stuck between them, those are the details that should decide it.
This comparison uses Afinil's Vilafinil 200 mg and Modvigil 200 mg product pages as they appeared on October 31, 2026, and the US prescribing information for Provigil, the original modafinil brand. We didn't take, test or lab-check either tablet. This page is general information, not medical advice; whether modafinil suits you, and at what dose, is a decision for your prescriber. We may earn a commission if you buy through our Afinil links, at no extra cost to you.
Vilafinil vs Modvigil at a glance
- Same drug, same strength: both pages list 200 mg modafinil per tablet.

- Price: Modvigil was cheaper at every pack size, by about 15% at 100 tablets and nearly 38% at 500.
- Pack sizes: Vilafinil stopped at 500 tablets. Modvigil went up to 1,000.
- Feedback: 16 reviews for Modvigil (4.9 out of 5) against 6 for Vilafinil (4.8 out of 5).
For most buyers, Modvigil is the better value. Vilafinil is the pick if you have a reason to prefer Centurion's tablet.

Who makes each tablet
Vilafinil 200 mg is listed by Afinil as a Centurion Laboratories product. Centurion is the same maker Afinil names for Modavinil (modafinil) and Armodavinil (armodafinil). Vilafinil is one of the lesser-known modafinil brands, and Afinil's own page admits it's "less popular" than other versions. Our Vilafinil 200 mg review covers what we could verify about it.
Modvigil 200 mg is HAB Pharmaceuticals' modafinil tablet. It's one of the most widely sold modafinil brands online, often paired with HAB's armodafinil tablet, Artvigil. HAB is a registered Indian drug company; our HAB Pharmaceuticals review looks at its records and at why the seller matters as much as the maker.
Neither tablet is FDA-approved, and neither is sold in US pharmacies. In the US, the FDA-approved modafinil products are Provigil and its approved generics.
Price per tablet, pack by pack
These are the per-tablet prices Afinil listed on October 31, 2026. Prices change, so treat the cart as the final word.
| Pack size | Vilafinil 200 mg | Modvigil 200 mg | Modvigil cheaper by |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 tablets | $3.99 | $2.99 | $1.00 a tablet |
| 20 tablets | $3.49 | $2.99 | $0.50 a tablet |
| 30 tablets | $2.99 | $2.59 | $0.40 a tablet |
| 50 tablets | $2.39 | $1.99 | $0.40 a tablet |
| 100 tablets | $1.99 | $1.69 | $0.30 a tablet |
| 200 tablets | $1.69 | $1.39 | $0.30 a tablet |
| 300 tablets | $1.66 | $1.33 | $0.33 a tablet |
| 500 tablets | $1.59 | $0.99 | $0.60 a tablet |
| 1,000 tablets | not offered | $0.89 | n/a |
What that means in dollars
These are examples worked out from the list prices above, before shipping or any payment discount:
- 30 tablets: Vilafinil about $90, Modvigil about $78. Difference: about $12.
- 100 tablets: Vilafinil about $199, Modvigil about $169. Difference: about $30.
- 500 tablets: Vilafinil about $795, Modvigil about $495. Difference: about $300.
The gap is small on a starter pack and large on a bulk order. Note that Modvigil's page says its prices are "valid while stocks last", so the discount may not last.
Shipping is the same store either way. Afinil's banner says orders over $130 ship free; the Modvigil page adds that Express Mail Service is free from $180 and Registered Airmail from $130. A 30-tablet order of either brand falls under both thresholds, so add shipping when you compare small orders.
Reviews and track record
Afinil showed 16 reviews for Modvigil with an average of 4.9 out of 5, and 6 reviews for Vilafinil averaging 4.8. Both scores are high and both samples are small. Afinil says its reviews are gathered through Yotpo, but even verified store reviews can't tell you how a given batch will work for you.
Track record is where Modvigil has a clearer edge. It's a long-running brand with plenty of discussion outside the store. Vilafinil has far less, which isn't a sign it's worse, just that there's less independent experience to go on.
Claims on the product pages we couldn't verify
Both pages contain lines a careful buyer should read with some skepticism.
- Insomnia. Both pages list insomnia among the conditions the drug treats. That's wrong. Modafinil promotes wakefulness. The US Provigil label approves it to improve wakefulness in adults with excessive sleepiness from narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea or shift work disorder.
- "Just as effective as the brand name drug." The Vilafinil page says this. We found no published bioequivalence data for Vilafinil against Provigil, so we can't confirm it. The same goes for Modvigil.
- Spotting fakes by urine smell or taste. The Modvigil page suggests you can tell real tablets from fakes by how they change the smell of your urine or by a bitter taste. That isn't a reliable test. The practical checks are buying from a seller with a track record, confirming the maker printed on the foil, and checking batch number and expiry date.
- Over-the-counter wording. Both pages are headed "Buy... Online OTC". In the US, modafinil is not over the counter. See the legal notes below.
We point these out not to single out these brands, since many vendor pages read the same way, but because the price table is the only part of these pages you can actually check before ordering.
What the label says about modafinil itself
Because the active drug is identical, everything on the Provigil label applies to both brands:
- Dose: 200 mg once a day. For narcolepsy or obstructive sleep apnea it's taken in the morning; for shift work disorder, about an hour before the shift starts. The label notes that doses up to 400 mg a day have been well tolerated but showed no consistent extra benefit over 200 mg.
- Timing: peak levels about 2 to 4 hours after a dose, with an effective half-life of about 15 hours after repeated dosing. Taking it late in the day can disrupt sleep.
- Common side effects: headache, nausea, nervousness, anxiety, dizziness and trouble sleeping.
- Serious warnings: rare but serious rash and allergic reactions (stop and get medical help for any rash), and psychiatric symptoms.
- Controlled substance: Schedule IV.
The label also says modafinil can reduce the effectiveness of hormonal birth control. For anything about other medicines you take, ask your prescriber or pharmacist; we don't cover combinations on this site.
Cost per month, as an example
Prices per tablet are easier to judge as a monthly cost. Say, purely as an example, that someone has been prescribed 200 mg on about 20 days a month. That's roughly 240 tablets a year. Using Afinil's October 31 list prices:
- Buying 30-tablet packs eight times: Vilafinil about $720 a year, Modvigil about $622.
- Buying one 300-tablet pack: Vilafinil about $498, Modvigil about $399, with tablets left over.
The bigger pack is cheaper per tablet, but it only pays off if the tablets are used before the expiry date printed on the strips. Check that date when the parcel arrives, and don't buy more than you can realistically use. Your own numbers will depend on your prescribed dose and how often you take it, which is your prescriber's call.
Trying before committing
If you've never taken either brand, there's no need to start with a big pack. Ten-tablet packs exist for both, at $3.99 a tablet for Vilafinil and $2.99 for Modvigil. Afinil also runs a free sample offer, which we cover in our Afinil free samples review, along with the conditions attached to it. A small first order also lets you check delivery time and packaging before spending more.
Which one fits which buyer
Pick Modvigil 200 if:
- Price per tablet matters to you. It was cheaper at every size.
- You want a bulk option above 500 tablets.
- You'd rather go with the brand that has more reviews and a longer public track record.
Pick Vilafinil 200 if:
- You already know Centurion's Modavinil suits you and want a sister brand from the same maker.
- You'd like to try a different maker from HAB, for example because you didn't get on with Modvigil's fillers or coating.
- You're buying a small pack and the price gap of a few dollars doesn't matter to you.
If you're torn between more than two brands, our ModaXL vs Modvigil for focus and Modvigil vs Modalert comparisons look at the other common options.
Switching between the two
Switching from one 200 mg modafinil brand to another is usually treated as a like-for-like change, because the drug and the dose don't change. A few sensible habits if your prescriber agrees to the switch:
- Keep your usual time of day and dose.
- Don't mix brands in the same day.
- Note any change in how you feel during the first week, including sleep.
- Keep the new strips in their original foil so you can check the maker and batch later.
Legal notes for US buyers
Modafinil is a Schedule IV controlled substance in the US and requires a valid prescription. Federal rules allow a Schedule IV prescription to be refilled at most five times within six months of the date it was written. Vilafinil and Modvigil are made in India and are not FDA-approved. Importing a controlled substance without a prescription isn't a legal route, and US customs can seize parcels. Product pages that say "OTC" or "no prescription needed" don't change US law.
If you have a prescription, a US pharmacy can fill it with FDA-approved generic modafinil. Our Modvigil buying guide and Is buying modafinil legal? explain the routes in more detail.
Verdict
Vilafinil 200 and Modvigil 200 deliver the same drug at the same dose, so the decision is mostly about money and maker. On October 31, 2026, Modvigil was cheaper at every pack size, by about $30 on 100 tablets and about $300 on 500, offered a 1,000-tablet pack, and had more reviews. That makes it the default choice for most buyers. Vilafinil is a fair alternative if you specifically want Centurion Laboratories' tablet. Whichever you look at, check the maker on the strip when it arrives, and remember that in the US you need a prescription.
FAQ
Is Vilafinil the same as Modvigil?
Both are listed as 200 mg modafinil tablets, the same active drug as Provigil, so they are meant to work the same way. They come from different makers: Afinil names Centurion Laboratories for Vilafinil and HAB Pharmaceuticals for Modvigil. Fillers, coating and batch history can differ.
Which is cheaper, Vilafinil 200 or Modvigil 200?
Modvigil, at every size we checked on October 31, 2026. At 100 tablets Afinil listed Vilafinil at $1.99 each and Modvigil at $1.69; at 500 tablets it was $1.59 vs $0.99. Modvigil also had a 1,000-tablet pack at $0.89 each, which Vilafinil didn't.
Is Vilafinil stronger than Modvigil?
There's no evidence of that. Both are labelled 200 mg modafinil, and we found no study comparing these two brands. Differences people report usually come down to sleep, timing, food or expectations.
How long do Vilafinil and Modvigil last?
The drug is the same, so duration is the same. The US Provigil label puts modafinil's effective half-life at about 15 hours after repeated doses, with peak levels about 2 to 4 hours after a dose. Afinil's pages say roughly 12 to 15 hours, which is in the same range.
Can I switch from Modvigil to Vilafinil?
They contain the same drug at the same strength, so many people treat them as interchangeable. Still, tell your prescriber and pharmacist about any brand change and pay attention to how you feel on the new one.
Do Vilafinil or Modvigil treat insomnia?
No. Both Afinil pages list insomnia among the conditions treated, but modafinil keeps people awake. The US label approves it for excessive sleepiness from narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea and shift work disorder, not for insomnia.
Do I need a prescription for either brand in the US?
Yes. Modafinil is a Schedule IV controlled substance and needs a valid prescription. Neither Vilafinil nor Modvigil is FDA-approved, and importing them without a prescription isn't a legal route.
Which one should I buy?
If price matters most, Modvigil is clearly cheaper and has more reviews. Vilafinil makes sense if you specifically want a Centurion tablet, for example because you already know Modavinil suits you.
