Timing: when each one is taken

Both labels describe a single daily dose in the morning for narcolepsy and sleep apnea, and a dose about an hour before the start of work for shift work disorder. Neither label suggests a second dose later in the day.

If a doctor has prescribed one of these for a real condition and you're a student too, timing is the conversation to have. Taking either drug late in the day is the most common reason people say it "ruined" their night. With armodafinil's higher evening levels, that's even more likely.

The food note is worth knowing. The Nuvigil label says a meal can push armodafinil's peak back by 2 to 4 hours, while modafinil's is delayed by about an hour. A dose with a big breakfast may not peak until early afternoon, which can make the evening tail longer still.

What the research says (and doesn't)

We looked for direct comparisons of armodafinil and modafinil in healthy students. We didn't find a trial that tests the two head to head for studying or learning.

What exists:

• Modafinil has been studied in healthy volunteers more than armodafinil. A widely cited 2015 review in *European Neuropsychopharmacology* reported small benefits on some attention and planning tasks in people who weren't sleep-deprived, mostly on longer, harder tasks, with little effect on simple tests. Other reviewers have called those results mixed.
• Armodafinil research has focused on people with sleep disorders and on sleep-deprived settings like shift work, which is what it's approved for. That tells us it promotes wakefulness, not that it improves learning in a rested student.

So anyone claiming one is clearly the better "study drug" is going beyond the evidence. Forum reports that armodafinil feels "smoother" or "stronger" are personal impressions, and they vary a lot.

Side effects: mostly shared

Because they're the same drug family, the side effect lists overlap. The most common effects on the labels include headache, nausea, dizziness and insomnia. Both labels also warn about rare but serious rashes and allergic reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome, as well as psychiatric symptoms such as anxiety, agitation or mania, and caution in people with certain heart conditions.

If you get a rash, swelling, chest pain or a sudden change in mood on either drug, stop and get medical help. Don't try to tough it out to finish a study session.

People sometimes assume armodafinil is the premium option. Per standard dose, it usually isn't.

• Armodafinil may suit someone whose days run long, but the higher evening levels make sleep the bigger risk.

For a healthy student with no sleep disorder, the honest answer is that neither is proven to help you learn, and both can cost you sleep. 3. Space it out: several short sessions beat one long cram.
4. Cut distractions: phone out of the room, notifications off.
