Armodafinil vs Modafinil: Which Costs Less per Day?
"Armodafinil vs modafinil cost" is really two questions. The first is about the shelf price of a tablet. The second, which matters more, is what you pay for one day's dose, because the two drugs are dosed differently. Once you put them on that footing, the answer at most online vendors is surprisingly dull: they cost the same, and the brand you pick moves the price far more than the molecule.
Prices on this page come from Afinil's product listings, checked on October 22, 2026. Dosing comes from the FDA labels for Provigil (modafinil) and Nuvigil (armodafinil). Prices change often, so treat our figures as a dated snapshot.
First, compare doses, not milligrams
Armodafinil is the R form of modafinil, the half of the molecule that lasts longer. Because of that, it's dosed lower:
- Modafinil: the Provigil label's standard dose is 200 mg once a day.
- Armodafinil: the Nuvigil label's standard dose is 150 mg once a day (250 mg is also listed for narcolepsy and sleep apnea).
So one 200 mg modafinil tablet and one 150 mg armodafinil tablet each make a standard day's dose. Comparing price per milligram would make armodafinil look more expensive than it is; comparing price per dose is the fair test.
Afinil's two price ladders
Afinil doesn't price products by drug. It prices them by maker. When we checked, there were two clear ladders.
Budget ladder (HAB Pharma, Emcure, Ranbaxy):
| Pack | Price | Per tablet |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | $29 | $2.99 |
| 30 | $79 | $2.59 |
| 100 | $169 | $1.69 |
| 500 | $499 | $0.99 |
| 1,000 | $899 | $0.89 |
Products on it included generic armodafinil 150, Artvigil 150, Armod 150, generic modafinil 200, Modvigil 200 and Provake 200 (some don't offer the 1,000 pack).
Standard ladder (Sun Pharma, HOF, Centurion, Intas):
| Pack | Price | Per tablet |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | $39 | $3.99 |
| 30 | $89 | $2.99 |
| 100 | $199 | $1.99 |
| 500 | $799 | $1.59 |
| 1,000 | $1,099 | $1.09 |
This one covered Waklert, ArmodaXL, Armodavinil, Artvigil 250, Modalert, ModaXL, Modavinil, Vilafinil and Modafil MD, among others.
Cost per day, worked out
Using 100-tablet packs as an example, and one tablet per day:
- Budget armodafinil 150 mg: about $1.69 a day.
- Budget modafinil 200 mg: about $1.69 a day.
- Standard armodafinil 150 mg (e.g. Waklert): about $1.99 a day.
- Standard modafinil 200 mg (e.g. Modalert): about $1.99 a day.
Within each tier, the two drugs cost exactly the same per day. Moving from budget to standard adds about 30 cents a day at this pack size. At 10 tablets the gap is $10 a pack; at 1,000 it's $200.
Shipping changes the picture slightly for small orders. Afinil listed free registered airmail on orders over $130, so packs of 50 tablets or fewer on either ladder would pay for shipping, while a 100-tablet pack wouldn't. These are example calculations from listed prices, not quotes.
What a month looks like (example)
To put the tiers in perspective, here's a made-up example of someone with a prescription who takes one tablet on 20 workdays a month and buys 100 tablets at a time:
- Budget ladder: 100 tablets for $169 covers five months, roughly $34 a month.
- Standard ladder: 100 tablets for $199 covers the same five months, roughly $40 a month.
Over a year that's about $72 between the tiers, and nothing at all between armodafinil and modafinil within the same tier. Your own numbers will depend on your dose, how often you take it and current prices, so treat this purely as an illustration.
When armodafinil can cost more
- Higher doses. If a doctor prescribes 250 mg armodafinil, Artvigil 250 sits on the standard ladder, so the day costs more than a 150 mg budget tablet. Our Artvigil 250 mg review has the details.
- Brand loyalty. Waklert costs more than Artvigil for the same drug and strength.
When modafinil can cost more
- Two tablets a day. Some people end up taking 400 mg of modafinil, which doubles the daily cost. The Provigil label says 400 mg didn't show consistent extra benefit over 200 mg in trials. See our 300 mg vs 200 mg guide before assuming more is better.
- Wasted afternoons. If modafinil wears off before your day ends and you're tempted to redose, a single armodafinil tablet may be the cheaper option in practice. Talk to your doctor rather than adding doses on your own.
The US pharmacy route
With a prescription, cost is a different calculation. Both drugs are available as US generics, and your insurance plan decides what you pay. Formularies vary: some plans cover generic modafinil more readily than armodafinil, others the reverse, and some need prior authorization for either. Ask your pharmacist to price both generics under your plan, and check discount-card prices too. That route is legal, the tablets are FDA-approved, and in some cases it costs less than importing. Our online doctor guide covers how to get a prescription.
Legal costs are costs too
Importing either drug without a prescription is illegal in the US, where both are Schedule IV controlled substances. US Customs and Border Protection can seize personal imports of controlled medicines that arrive without a prescription. A seized parcel is money lost, even with a reship policy, and the legal risk falls on the buyer. Afinil calls its products "OTC", which isn't accurate in the US. More in our legal notes.
Side effects don't depend on price
A budget tablet and a premium one contain the same drug, so the label warnings apply equally. Common side effects include headache, nausea, dizziness and insomnia. Rare but serious problems include dangerous skin rashes, allergic reactions, psychiatric symptoms and heart symptoms; stop and get medical help if any appear. Both drugs can weaken hormonal birth control during use and for a month after. Never take armodafinil and modafinil together. See our medical disclaimer.
How to keep the cost down sensibly
- Pick the drug with your doctor first, then compare brands within it.
- Consider a budget-ladder brand. Our Artvigil vs Waklert and Modvigil vs Modalert pages cover the trade-offs.
- Start with a small pack to confirm it suits you, even though the per-tablet price is higher.
- Then size up gradually, keeping expiry dates in mind.
- Use legitimate discounts only. Afinil's store credit and crypto discount are real; "secret coupon" sites often aren't.
Verdict
Per daily dose, armodafinil and modafinil cost the same at Afinil when they come from the same maker: about $1.69 a day on the budget ladder and $1.99 on the standard one, using 100-tablet packs as the example. What really moves your cost is the brand tier, the pack size and whether you end up taking more than one tablet. Choose the drug on medical grounds with your doctor, then pick the brand on price.
FAQ
Is armodafinil cheaper than modafinil?
At Afinil, not per dose. On October 22, 2026, a 150 mg armodafinil tablet and a 200 mg modafinil tablet from the same maker cost exactly the same. Since each is one standard daily dose, the daily cost matches.
Why does the brand matter more than the drug?
Afinil uses two price ladders. HAB Pharma's and Emcure's tablets sit on a budget ladder ($2.99 to $0.89 per tablet); Sun Pharma, HOF and Centurion brands sit on a higher one ($3.99 to $1.09).
What's the cheapest armodafinil at Afinil?
The budget-ladder products: HAB's generic armodafinil and Artvigil 150, and Emcure's Armod, all listed at $29 for 10 tablets when we checked.
What's the cheapest modafinil at Afinil?
Budget-ladder 200 mg tablets such as HAB's generic modafinil, Modvigil and Ranbaxy's Provake, from $29 for 10.
Is a higher dose more expensive?
It can be. Artvigil 250 mg sits on the higher ladder, and taking two modafinil tablets doubles the daily cost. The labels didn't show consistent extra benefit at higher doses in their trials.
Does insurance change the comparison?
Yes. With a prescription in the US, your plan's formulary and copay decide which is cheaper for you, and that can differ from online prices. Ask your pharmacist to price both generics.
Are budget-ladder tablets lower quality?
We have no evidence either way. Price tiers reflect the brand and maker, and we haven't lab-tested any of them. Check strips for the maker's name, batch number and expiry.
Do I need a prescription for either?
Yes. Both are Schedule IV controlled substances in the US, so you need a valid prescription from a US-licensed prescriber for either one.
