Armodafinil 150 mg vs 250 mg: Which Strength Makes Sense?

· · Fact-checked October 2026 · How we review

Headache rates at 250 mg vs 150 mg armodafinil and placebo
Share of patients reporting headache in Nuvigil trials (label Table 2)

Armodafinil comes in several strengths, but the choice people ask about most is 150 mg vs 250 mg. Is the bigger tablet worth it? This page compares the two using the US Nuvigil (armodafinil) prescribing information, then adds what each strength cost when we checked prices. It isn't medical advice, and your prescriber decides your dose.

The short answer

  • Benefit: For obstructive sleep apnea, the label found no consistent evidence that 250 mg works better than 150 mg.
  • Side effects: Most common side effects were more frequent at 250 mg. Headache went from 14% to 23%.
  • Maximum: 250 mg once a day is the highest dose on the label.
  • Price: 250 mg tablets usually cost a bit more per tablet.
  • Bottom line: 150 mg is the sensible default. Moving to 250 mg is a decision for your prescriber, not a shortcut to a stronger effect.

What the label says about each dose

The Nuvigil label sets doses by condition:

ConditionLabel dose
Obstructive sleep apnea150 mg or 250 mg once in the morning
Narcolepsy150 mg or 250 mg once in the morning
Shift work disorder150 mg about 1 hour before the shift

For sleep apnea, it says doses up to 250 mg a day were well tolerated, but there was "no consistent evidence that these doses confer additional benefit beyond that of the 150 mg/day dose." For shift work disorder, the only dose listed is 150 mg.

The label also notes that people with severe liver problems should have a reduced dose, and that lower doses should be considered for older adults. Those are good examples of why 250 mg isn't a default for everyone.

Side effects: 150 mg vs 250 mg

The Nuvigil label includes a table of side effects that rose with the dose. These are the rates reported in its trials:

Side effectPlacebo150 mg250 mg
Headache9%14%23%
Nausea3%6%9%
Dry mouthunder 1%2%7%
Insomnia1%4%6%
Rashunder 1%1%4%
Depressionunder 1%1%3%

Headache is the big one. Nearly one in four people taking 250 mg reported it in the trials, compared with about one in seven at 150 mg. Dry mouth more than tripled.

The label also warns about rare but serious reactions at any dose, including serious rash and allergic reactions and psychiatric symptoms. Stop and get medical help if you develop a rash, hives, swelling or trouble breathing, and talk to your prescriber about any mood changes.

Armodafinil 150 mg vs 250 mg at a glance

Why more isn't necessarily better

It's tempting to assume a bigger tablet means a stronger effect. For armodafinil, the trial data don't back that up for sleep apnea. If the extra 100 mg doesn't reliably add benefit but does add side effects, the trade-off favors 150 mg for most people.

There's a timing angle too. Armodafinil's terminal half-life is about 15 hours, according to the label. A larger dose means more drug still in your system in the evening, which can matter for sleep. The label lists insomnia at 6% on 250 mg vs 4% on 150 mg.

When might a prescriber choose 250 mg?

The label allows 250 mg for sleep apnea and narcolepsy, and some people's prescribers do use it. Common reasons a doctor might consider it include persistent daytime sleepiness on 150 mg after other causes have been looked at. That's a clinical judgment. If 150 mg isn't helping, the right move is to talk to your prescriber rather than taking more on your own.

At US pharmacies

The CMS NADAC survey reports what US pharmacies pay to buy drugs. As of October 2026, the average acquisition cost was about $0.80 per generic armodafinil 150 mg tablet and about $0.88 per 250 mg tablet. Those aren't retail prices; your cash price includes markup and fees. Still, they show the two strengths cost pharmacies roughly the same, so with a US prescription the price gap is usually small.

Example monthly cost (illustration only)

Using Afinil's 100-tablet prices as example numbers, 30 days at one tablet a day works out to:

  • 150 mg: 30 × $1.69 = about $50.70
  • 250 mg: 30 × $1.99 = about $59.70 (Artvigil) or 30 × $2.39 = about $71.70 (Extra Strong ArmodaXL)

That's example math, not a quote, and it ignores shipping.

Which strength fits which situation?

SituationWhat the label points to
Shift work disorder150 mg, about 1 hour before the shift
Sleep apnea, still using CPAP150 mg is the usual dose; 250 mg showed no consistent extra benefit
Narcolepsy150 mg or 250 mg, set by the prescriber
Severe liver impairmentReduced dose
Older adultsConsider lower doses

The label also points out that armodafinil isn't a replacement for treating the cause of sleepiness. For sleep apnea, that means CPAP or other prescribed treatment should continue.

Buying 250 mg armodafinil

If your prescriber writes for 250 mg, a US pharmacy can fill generic armodafinil 250 mg. The brand Nuvigil 250 mg is much more expensive: NADAC data put pharmacy cost at about $34.70 per tablet in October 2026.

Online, Afinil listed two 250 mg products when we checked: Artvigil 250 by HAB Pharma and Extra Strong ArmodaXL 250 by HOF Pharmaceuticals. We've covered the first in our Artvigil 250 mg review. For 150 mg brands, see our reviews of ArmodaXL 150 mg and Armodavinil 150 mg, and our Artvigil vs Waklert comparison.

Safety notes

Don't combine strengths or take extra tablets to "boost" a dose. The label's maximum is 250 mg once a day. Read the warnings in the label, talk to your prescriber about your health history, and see our medical disclaimer.

Buying armodafinil in the US

Armodafinil is a Schedule IV controlled substance in the US. It's legal with a valid prescription filled by a licensed pharmacy. Buying it without one, including from overseas sellers, can break federal and state law, and imports can be seized. Our legal notes explain more, and our guide to getting a prescription from an online doctor covers the legal route.

Verdict

For most people, 150 mg is the better choice. The Nuvigil label found no consistent extra benefit from 250 mg for sleep apnea, while headache, dry mouth, rash and other side effects rose at the higher dose. The 150 mg tablet is usually a little cheaper too. If 150 mg isn't enough, talk to your prescriber rather than reaching for the 250.

FAQ

Is 250 mg armodafinil stronger than 150 mg?

It's a bigger dose, but the Nuvigil label says there was no consistent evidence that 250 mg gives more benefit than 150 mg for obstructive sleep apnea. For narcolepsy, the label lists either 150 mg or 250 mg once a day.

Does 250 mg have more side effects than 150 mg?

Yes. In the label's dose comparison, headache was reported by 23% at 250 mg vs 14% at 150 mg, and dry mouth by 7% vs 2%. Rash, nausea, insomnia and depression were also more common at 250 mg.

What's the maximum armodafinil dose?

The Nuvigil label lists 250 mg once a day as the highest recommended dose. Taking more isn't recommended.

Should I start on 150 or 250 mg?

That's your prescriber's call. The label doses for shift work disorder at 150 mg, and gives 150 to 250 mg for sleep apnea and narcolepsy, so 150 mg is a common starting point.

Is 250 mg armodafinil more expensive?

Usually a little. At Afinil on October 22, 2026, a 100-tablet pack cost $1.69 a tablet for generic armodafinil 150 mg and $1.99 for Artvigil 250 mg. US pharmacies paid about $0.80 vs $0.88 per tablet for generic 150 mg and 250 mg in the CMS NADAC survey.

Can I take two 150 mg tablets instead of 250 mg?

Two 150 mg tablets would be 300 mg, which is above the label's 250 mg maximum. Don't change your dose without your prescriber.

Does 250 mg last longer?

The label doesn't describe a longer duration at 250 mg. Armodafinil's half-life is about 15 hours either way, so either dose taken late in the day can affect sleep.

Is 150 mg armodafinil the same as 200 mg modafinil?

They're different drugs with different doses. Armodafinil is the longer-lasting R-isomer of modafinil, and the labels set their own dose ranges.
