Armodafinil 50 mg vs 150 mg: what pharmacies pay
Generic tablet cost from the CMS NADAC survey (as of October 28, 2026)

Armodafinil 50 mg is the odd one out. It's an FDA-approved strength, it's the cheapest tablet on a per-pill basis, and yet a lot of people who search for its price find the pharmacy doesn't have it, the coupon site shows a strange number, or the online stores only sell 150 mg and up. This guide explains what armodafinil 50 mg actually costs in the US, why, and how to check your own price before you fill.

It's general information, not medical, legal or pricing advice. Prices change, and your pharmacist and prescriber know your situation better than any website.

The quick version

  • It's cheap to buy. In the CMS NADAC survey as of October 28, 2026, US pharmacies paid about $0.30 per generic 50 mg tablet.
  • Per milligram, it's not the cheapest. The generic 150 mg tablet cost pharmacies about $0.80, which works out slightly cheaper per milligram.
  • Stock is patchy. It's the least used strength, so many stores order it in.
  • Brand Nuvigil 50 mg is rare. The NADAC data we checked listed the brand only at higher strengths.
  • You need a prescription. Armodafinil is a Schedule IV controlled substance in the US.

What is armodafinil 50 mg?

Armodafinil is the active ingredient in Nuvigil, a prescription wakefulness drug. The FDA label lists four tablet strengths: 50 mg, 150 mg, 200 mg and 250 mg. It's approved to improve wakefulness in adults with excessive sleepiness linked to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), narcolepsy or shift work disorder.

The usual label doses are higher than 50 mg. For OSA or narcolepsy, the label gives 150 mg to 250 mg once a day in the morning. For shift work disorder, it's 150 mg about an hour before the shift. The label also tells prescribers to consider a lower dose in older adults and to reduce the dose in people with severe liver problems.

That's why the 50 mg tablet exists, and also why it isn't a big seller. Which strength you take is your prescriber's decision. This page is about price only.

What pharmacies pay: the NADAC numbers

NADAC (National Average Drug Acquisition Cost) is a weekly CMS survey of what US retail pharmacies pay wholesalers. It isn't the price at the counter, but it's the best public anchor for what a fair generic price looks like. Here's what it showed for generic armodafinil as of October 28, 2026:

StrengthPharmacy cost per tabletCost per 50 mg of armodafinil
50 mgabout $0.30about $0.30
150 mgabout $0.80about $0.27
200 mgabout $0.79about $0.20
250 mgabout $0.88about $0.18

The pattern is common with generics: higher strengths cost only a little more per tablet, so they're cheaper per milligram. That doesn't mean a higher strength is better for you. It just explains why a 50 mg prescription isn't the bargain it looks like if you think in milligrams.

For comparison, brand Nuvigil cost pharmacies about $34.75 per 150 mg tablet in the same data. If anything on your receipt looks like a brand price, check whether the pharmacy filled the brand.

What you might pay at the counter

Your price depends on three things: your insurance, any discount card, and the pharmacy's own cash price.

An example only, not a quote. If a pharmacy pays about $0.30 per tablet, a 30-tablet fill costs it about $9 to buy. Its cash price will be higher than that because it includes the store's markup and dispensing costs. A discount card can bring the cash price down toward a negotiated rate. With insurance, your share is set by your plan's tier and deductible, not by the tablet's cost.

The practical point: if someone quotes you a price many times higher than the NADAC cost for 30 generic 50 mg tablets, it's worth checking another pharmacy or card.

How to find your own armodafinil 50 mg price
A five-minute routine before you fill the prescription

Why your pharmacy might not have it

Armodafinil 50 mg is the least prescribed strength, so a lot of stores don't keep it in stock. What that means for you:

  • Call before you go. Ask whether they have generic armodafinil 50 mg in the count on your prescription.
  • Ask how long a special order takes. Many pharmacies can get it within a day or two from their wholesaler.
  • A quoted price isn't a promise. A coupon site may show a price for a store that doesn't have it on the shelf.
  • Don't switch strengths on your own. If 50 mg is hard to get, ask your prescriber what they want you to do. Don't split or combine tablets unless your prescriber or pharmacist tells you to.

Insurance and armodafinil 50 mg

Many plans cover generic armodafinil, but coverage is set strength by strength.

  • Check the exact strength on the formulary. A plan can list 150 mg and 250 mg but treat 50 mg differently.
  • Prior authorization is common. Plans often want proof of an approved diagnosis: OSA, narcolepsy or shift work disorder.
  • Quantity limits apply. A plan may limit you to a set number of tablets a month. If your prescriber wants you to take more than one 50 mg tablet, the plan may need an exception.
  • Deductibles matter. Early in the plan year you might pay the full negotiated price until you meet your deductible.

If the claim is rejected, ask the pharmacist for the reason. A missing prior authorization or a quantity limit usually has a paperwork fix through your prescriber.

Discount cards and coupons

Free pharmacy discount cards list cash prices for generic armodafinil, including 50 mg at many stores. A few tips:

  • Look up the exact strength and count. Prices for 50 mg and 150 mg are listed separately.
  • Check two cards. The same store can show different prices on different cards.
  • Ask for the plain cash price too. Sometimes it beats the card.
  • You usually can't stack. It's either insurance or a card on a single fill, and card payments may not count toward your deductible.

Our modafinil coupon guide explains how these cards work step by step, and the same steps apply to armodafinil 50 mg.

What about overseas vendors?

Some people look at overseas stores for armodafinil. Afinil, which we link to and earn a commission from, sells generic armodafinil made by HAB Pharma. When we checked on October 30, 2026, it was listed at 150 mg only. Afinil's other armodafinil products (Artvigil, Waklert, ArmodaXL, Armodavinil and others) were 150 mg or 250 mg. We didn't see a 50 mg product.

For reference, Afinil listed its generic armodafinil 150 mg from $2.99 a tablet in a 10-pack down to $0.89 a tablet in a 1,000-pack, with free shipping on orders over $130. Prices change, so check the live page.

Be clear on the trade-offs:

  • It doesn't match a 50 mg prescription. A 150 mg tablet is three times the dose.
  • It's not a legal shortcut. Armodafinil is a Schedule IV controlled substance in the US. Importing it without a valid prescription can break federal and state law, and packages can be seized. See our legal notes.
  • It's not FDA-approved. These products are made for other markets.
  • It's often not cheaper. The NADAC figures above show US generic armodafinil is inexpensive for pharmacies to buy. A well-shopped US fill can beat import prices, with a pharmacist checking your other medicines.

If you want to understand the 150 mg options anyway, our armodafinil 150 mg price guide breaks the brands down by price band.

Armodafinil 50 mg vs modafinil 100 mg

People sometimes compare low-dose armodafinil with low-dose modafinil on price. Both are generics, both are Schedule IV, and both need a prescription. They aren't interchangeable milligram for milligram, so switching is a prescriber decision. On price alone, the October 2026 NADAC survey showed generic modafinil 100 mg at about $0.25 a tablet, close to armodafinil 50 mg's $0.30.

Safety notes

Price shouldn't decide whether armodafinil is right for you, or which strength you take. The Nuvigil label includes warnings about serious rash, allergic reactions and psychiatric symptoms, and some people shouldn't take it. Ask your prescriber and pharmacist to review your health history and other medicines, and read our medical disclaimer.

Bottom line

Armodafinil 50 mg is the cheapest tablet per pill, at about $0.30 for pharmacies in the October 2026 NADAC data, but slightly pricier per milligram than higher strengths, and it can be harder to find. Call ahead, compare your insurance price with two discount cards and the store's cash price, and talk to your prescriber rather than switching strengths to save money. Overseas vendors we checked didn't sell a 50 mg tablet, and buying from them doesn't change US law.

FAQ

How much does armodafinil 50 mg cost?

Retail prices vary by pharmacy, plan and coupon. As a reference, the CMS NADAC survey showed US pharmacies paying about $0.30 per generic armodafinil 50 mg tablet as of October 28, 2026.

Is armodafinil 50 mg cheaper than 150 mg?

The Nuvigil label lists 50 mg, 150 mg, 200 mg and 250 mg tablets. The October 2026 NADAC data we checked listed brand Nuvigil only at 150, 200 and 250 mg, which suggests the brand 50 mg is rarely bought by pharmacies now.
