Modafinil Not Working Anymore? What to Check First

Things to check when modafinil feels weaker
A checklist of common reasons modafinil can feel less effective

You used to feel clear-headed and awake by mid-morning, and now a 200 mg tablet barely seems to make a dent. It's a common complaint, and it's worth taking seriously, because the answer isn't usually "take more." This page explains what the official US label says about modafinil's effect over time, the everyday reasons it can seem to fade, and what to talk through with your doctor.

For this page we read the current FDA prescribing information for Provigil (modafinil) and its Medication Guide, and Afinil's ModaXL product page. We haven't tested any product in a lab. Nothing here is medical advice, and if you're still sleepy, the right next step is a conversation with your prescriber.

We earn a commission if you buy through our Afinil links, at no extra cost to you. It doesn't change what we say about safety or prescriptions.

First, a safety point

If modafinil isn't keeping you awake, don't drive or do anything risky while you're sleepy. The label specifically warns that some people stay sleepy even while taking it, and says prescribers should check how sleepy patients are and advise them against driving or other dangerous activities when needed. Feeling "less awake than before" is exactly what that warning is about.

Does modafinil stop working over time?

The honest answer from the label is: not in any clear, predictable way.

The Provigil prescribing information mentions that in adults, the lowest blood levels of modafinil between doses sometimes went down after several weeks of daily use. That pattern can mean the body has started breaking the drug down a little faster. But the label adds that the size of the drop was modest and it didn't happen consistently, so it says the clinical significance appears minimal.

In other words, the official data doesn't point to a strong built-in tolerance. That's useful, because it means the more likely reasons are things you and your doctor can actually look into.

Common reasons modafinil can feel weaker

1. You're sleeping less than you think

Modafinil treats excessive sleepiness, but it doesn't cancel out a sleep debt. If your nights have got shorter or more broken since you started, the same dose has more ground to cover. Work changes, a new baby, late screens, stress and alcohol can all chip away at sleep without you noticing day to day.

A simple diary helps. For one week, write down when you went to bed, when you got up, roughly how long you slept and how alert you felt at mid-morning and mid-afternoon.

2. The underlying condition has changed

Modafinil is approved for sleepiness linked to narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea and shift work disorder. These conditions can shift over time. For example, with sleep apnea, the label is clear that modafinil isn't a treatment for the airway problem itself. If your breathing treatment (such as a CPAP machine) isn't being used every night, or isn't working as well as it did, sleepiness can creep back regardless of the tablet.

Other health issues, such as low iron, thyroid problems, low mood or a new illness, can also cause tiredness. Your doctor can check for these.

3. Your timing has drifted

The label's dosing is simple: for narcolepsy or sleep apnea, 200 mg once a day in the morning; for shift work disorder, 200 mg about an hour before the shift starts. Peak blood levels arrive about 2 to 4 hours after a dose.

If you've started taking it later in the day, the peak comes later too, and a late dose can make it harder to sleep that night. That, in turn, makes the next day harder. It can turn into a loop where it feels like the drug "isn't working" when the real issue is that it's disturbing your sleep. Our page on the best time to take Provigil covers the label's timing rules in more detail.

4. You're taking it with a heavy meal

According to the label, food doesn't change how much modafinil is absorbed, but it can push back the peak by about an hour. On its own that won't stop it working, but if you've switched from taking it on an empty stomach to taking it with a large breakfast, it may feel slower to start.

5. A new medicine or supplement

Modafinil is broken down mainly by the liver, and some other medicines can affect how it's handled, or be affected by it. If you've started anything new, including over-the-counter products, tell your pharmacist and prescriber. Don't try to work out interactions on your own.

6. The product has changed

This one is easy to miss. If you switched from a US pharmacy bottle to an imported product, or from one imported brand to another, you may not be comparing like with like.

  • FDA-approved US generics must show bioequivalence to the brand, so they're expected to act the same way.
  • Imported export generics, such as ModaXL, Modalert or Modvigil, aren't FDA-approved and haven't shown bioequivalence to the FDA. We can't promise what's in any given pack.
  • Storage and age matter too. The brand label says to store tablets at room temperature, 68 to 77°F. Tablets kept in a hot car or a steamy bathroom, or used well past their expiry date, are a fair thing to question.

Check the active ingredient (modafinil, not armodafinil), the strength, the batch number and the expiry date on the pack.

7. Expectations have settled

Many people notice modafinil most in the first days, when the change from their usual sleepiness is sharpest. Later, being awake simply feels normal, so the effect is less obvious even if it's still there. A diary that rates your alertness on a simple 1 to 10 scale can show whether things have actually changed.

Why "just take more" isn't the answer

It's tempting to double up. But the label is clear that while doses up to 400 mg a day were well tolerated in studies, there was no consistent evidence of extra benefit over 200 mg. A higher dose also stays in the body longer, which can cut into sleep and make the next day worse.

Splitting doses or adding a second dose later in the day isn't something to try on your own either. If your prescriber thinks a different schedule makes sense, they'll tell you how. Our page on taking modafinil twice a day explains what the label does and doesn't say about split dosing, and our 300 mg vs 200 mg page covers higher strengths.

What to do next

What to do if modafinil isn't working
A cautious order of steps when modafinil seems to stop working
  1. Keep a one-week diary. Note sleep, dose time, food and alertness. This gives your doctor something concrete to work with.
  2. Check your pack. Confirm the drug name, strength, batch and expiry. If the product changed recently, note when.
  3. Book a review with your prescriber. Tell them the effect seems weaker, and share your diary.
  4. Ask about the cause, not just the dose. Ask whether your sleep apnea treatment, sleep schedule or other health issues should be checked again.
  5. Only change the dose with your doctor. That includes adding doses or switching to armodafinil.

When to get help sooner

Don't wait for a routine appointment if, along with the drop in effect, you notice:

  • a rash, blistering, mouth sores, or swelling of the face, lips or throat,
  • chest pain, a racing or uneven heartbeat, or trouble breathing,
  • new low mood, anxiety, agitation or unusual thoughts, or
  • falling asleep at the wheel or in other dangerous situations.

The label lists serious skin and allergic reactions and psychiatric symptoms among its warnings. Stop and get medical help right away if any of these happen. See our medical disclaimer for more.

If you buy imported modafinil

Some readers who aren't seeing a US prescriber buy imported modafinil online. If that's you, a "not working" feeling is a good moment to think about where your tablets come from. Modafinil is a Schedule IV controlled substance in the US, and our legal notes explain the gray area around imports.

Afinil, the vendor we link to, sells ModaXL 200 mg, a modafinil tablet. If you choose to buy imported tablets, stick to one consistent product so you can actually tell whether something has changed, keep them at room temperature, and still talk to a clinician about why you need them.

Bottom line

The official label doesn't describe a strong tolerance to modafinil, so when it seems to stop working, the usual suspects are shorter or worse sleep, a change in your sleep condition, later dosing, a new medicine or a change in the product itself. Don't raise the dose on your own: the label shows no consistent benefit above 200 mg a day. Keep a short diary, check your pack, and take it to your prescriber, and don't drive while you're still sleepy.

FAQ

Can you build a tolerance to modafinil?

The Provigil label notes that trough blood levels sometimes dropped after several weeks of dosing, but says the size and inconsistency of the drop suggest it has minimal clinical significance. If it feels weaker, look at sleep and other causes with your doctor.

Should I take more modafinil if it stops working?

No, not on your own. The label says doses up to 400 mg a day were well tolerated but gave no consistent extra benefit over 200 mg. Any change should come from your prescriber.

Why does modafinil make me feel tired some days?

Modafinil doesn't replace sleep. The label warns that people may stay sleepy even on treatment and should be checked regularly. Poor sleep, illness or a new medicine can all play a part.

Does food stop modafinil from working?

No. The label says food doesn't change how much is absorbed, but it may delay the peak by about an hour, so it can feel slower to start.

Could my modafinil be fake?

With imported products it's possible. Export generics aren't FDA-approved and we haven't lab-tested any. Check the pack details and buy only from a vendor with a clear track record.

Is it safe to drive if modafinil isn't working?

If you're still sleepy, don't drive. The label advises people with ongoing sleepiness to avoid driving or other risky activities until it's assessed.
