Armodafinil 150 mg Dosage, Explained From the Label

· · Fact-checked October 2026 · How we review

Armodafinil label doses by condition
Armodafinil doses for each approved use, from the US Nuvigil label

If you've been prescribed armodafinil, or you're reading up before an appointment, "150 mg" is the number you'll see most. This guide explains where that dose comes from, how it changes by condition, when 250 mg comes up, and which people the label singles out for a lower dose. Every figure here comes from the US Nuvigil (armodafinil) prescribing information. It isn't medical advice, and only your prescriber can set your dose.

The short answer

  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA): 150 mg or 250 mg, once a day in the morning. In OSA studies, 250 mg showed no consistent extra benefit over 150 mg.
  • Narcolepsy: 150 mg or 250 mg, once a day in the morning.
  • Shift work disorder (SWD): 150 mg, taken about 1 hour before the start of the work shift.
  • Severe liver impairment: a reduced dose.
  • Older adults: a lower dose should be considered.
  • Under 18: not approved.

So 150 mg is the one dose that appears for every approved use. That's why it's the strength most pharmacies and vendors stock.

What armodafinil is approved for

Armodafinil is approved in the US to improve wakefulness in adults with excessive sleepiness from three conditions: obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy and shift work disorder. For OSA, the label is careful to say it treats the leftover sleepiness, not the apnea itself. The airway problem still needs its own treatment, such as CPAP, and armodafinil isn't a replacement for it.

The label also states that armodafinil is not a replacement for sleep. If daytime sleepiness comes from not getting enough sleep, the fix is more sleep, not a pill.

Why 150 mg, and why 250 mg rarely adds much

The 150 mg figure comes from the clinical trials used for approval. In OSA, both 150 mg and 250 mg were studied. The label notes that doses up to 250 mg a day, given once, were well tolerated, but there was no consistent evidence that 250 mg gave additional benefit beyond 150 mg.

That matters in practice. A higher dose doesn't make armodafinil work better for most people in those trials, but it does leave more drug in the body later in the day. With a half-life of about 15 hours, the extra amount is often still around at bedtime. That long tail is the main practical cost of going above 150 mg.

For shift work disorder, the label gives only 150 mg. No 250 mg option is listed for that use.

Timing your dose

The label ties timing to the condition, and the reasoning is simple: the dose should cover the hours you need to be awake, and not the hours you need to sleep.

  1. OSA and narcolepsy: take it once, in the morning. Taking it late raises the chance of trouble sleeping that night.
  2. Shift work: take it about 1 hour before your shift. If you work nights, that may mean a dose in the evening. Plan your daytime sleep with your prescriber.
  3. With or without food: the label notes that food can delay the time it takes to reach peak levels by 2 to 4 hours. Being consistent day to day helps keep the effect predictable.

Who may need a different dose

The label calls out a few groups:

  • Severe liver impairment: armodafinil is cleared mainly by the liver, so the label calls for a reduced dose in people with severe hepatic impairment, with or without cirrhosis.
  • Older adults: levels may be higher because clearance can be slower, so a lower dose should be considered.
  • Children and teens: not approved for anyone under 18. Serious rashes have been reported in children taking modafinil-type drugs.
  • People on other medicines: armodafinil affects some liver enzymes, so the dose of other drugs (and the effectiveness of hormonal birth control) can change. Tell your pharmacist everything you take.

Tablet strengths

Nuvigil has been made in 50 mg, 150 mg, 200 mg and 250 mg tablets. US generic armodafinil comes in similar strengths, depending on the manufacturer. The 50 mg tablet lets prescribers step a dose up or down in small amounts. Indian export brands, such as Waklert and Artvigil, are mostly sold as 150 mg tablets, and HAB Pharma also makes Artvigil in 250 mg (see our Artvigil 250 mg review).

How 150 mg armodafinil relates to modafinil doses

Armodafinil is the R-form of modafinil, the half that lasts longer in the body. Modafinil is a 50:50 mix of R and S forms, and the S-form clears in about 4 hours. Because of that, you can't compare the two by milligrams alone. The usual label doses are 150 mg for armodafinil and 200 mg for modafinil, and the Nuvigil label reports that at those levels armodafinil gives higher drug levels later in the day. If you're comparing the two in more depth, see our Waklert 150 vs Nuvigil generic comparison.

Never switch between them, or between doses, without your prescriber.

A sample label-based schedule (illustration only)

Here are two made-up examples to show how the label wording turns into a day. They're illustrations, not recommendations:

  • Example 1, sleep apnea: someone using CPAP each night is prescribed 150 mg. They take it at 7 AM with a glass of water and keep the timing the same each day.
  • Example 2, night shift: a nurse who starts work at 10 PM is prescribed 150 mg. They take it at about 9 PM and sleep from mid-morning, with blackout curtains, after the shift.

In both examples, there's one dose, at a fixed time, and nothing extra later.

Side effects to know about at 150 mg

The most common side effect in the label's trials was headache (17% on armodafinil vs 9% on placebo). Other common ones include nausea, dizziness and trouble sleeping. Stop and get medical help right away for:

  • A rash, blistering, peeling or mouth sores.
  • Swelling of the face, lips or throat, or trouble breathing.
  • Chest pain or a racing heartbeat.
  • New anxiety, low mood, confusion or other mental changes.

Buying armodafinil 150 mg

In the US, armodafinil is a Schedule IV prescription medicine, and FDA-approved generics are available from pharmacies with a prescription. Afinil sells Indian export generics, including HAB Pharma's generic armodafinil 150 mg, which was listed from $29 for 10 tablets on October 22, 2026. These tablets aren't FDA-approved, and buying them without a prescription isn't legal in the US and many other countries. Please read our legal notes first, and see our online doctor guide for legal prescription routes.

Verdict

On the US Nuvigil label, 150 mg once a day is the core armodafinil dose. It's the only dose listed for shift work disorder (about 1 hour before the shift) and one of two options, with 250 mg, for sleep apnea and narcolepsy (in the morning). The label found no consistent benefit from 250 mg over 150 mg in sleep apnea, calls for a lower dose in severe liver impairment, suggests considering one in older adults, and doesn't approve the drug for anyone under 18. Keep to one dose at a fixed time, and leave any change to your prescriber.

FAQ

What is the normal dose of armodafinil?

The US Nuvigil label gives 150 mg once a day as the dose for shift work disorder, and 150 mg or 250 mg once a day for obstructive sleep apnea and narcolepsy.

Is 150 mg of armodafinil a lot?

It's the standard label dose, not a high one. Higher doses exist (250 mg), but the label found no consistent extra benefit from 250 mg over 150 mg in sleep apnea.

When should I take armodafinil 150 mg?

For sleep apnea and narcolepsy, once in the morning. For shift work disorder, about 1 hour before the start of the shift.

Can I take 150 mg armodafinil twice a day?

The label describes once-daily dosing only. A second dose would carry the drug well into the night. Talk to your prescriber if one dose isn't enough.

Is armodafinil 150 mg the same as modafinil 200 mg?

They aren't milligram-for-milligram the same. Armodafinil is the longer-acting half of modafinil, so a smaller dose gives similar later-day levels. The labels set 150 mg and 200 mg as the usual doses of each.

Can I cut a 150 mg tablet in half?

That depends on the specific tablet. Ask your pharmacist before splitting, and only change your dose if your prescriber says so.

Do older adults need a lower dose?

The label says a lower dose should be considered in older adults, because they may clear the drug more slowly.

Can teenagers take armodafinil?

No. The US label says armodafinil is not approved for use in anyone under 18.
