Nuvigil vs Provigil label facts side by side
Nuvigil (armodafinil) vs Provigil (modafinil): key label facts

People who search "Nuvigil vs Provigil" usually have one of two situations. Either a doctor has mentioned both and they want to know what the difference is, or they have used one and wonder whether the other would suit them better. This page compares the two using the official US prescribing information, then adds what we know about the cheaper generic versions. We're not doctors, so treat this as background reading before a conversation with one, not a replacement for it.

Same family, two molecules

Provigil is the brand name for modafinil. Modafinil is a racemic mixture, which means it contains two mirror-image forms of the same molecule, called the R and S enantiomers. Nuvigil is the brand name for armodafinil, which is just the R form on its own.

Why does that matter? The two forms leave the body at different speeds. The R form hangs around longer, and that's why Nuvigil was developed. Both brands were made by Cephalon, which is now part of Teva, so this isn't a rivalry between two companies. It's one company's original product and its follow-up.

For you, the practical effect is simple: the doses differ, and some people notice that armodafinil keeps working a little later in the day.

What the labels say each one is for

Here is the part that surprises people. The approved uses are identical. Both US labels say the drug is for improving wakefulness in adults with excessive sleepiness linked to:

  • Narcolepsy
  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), as an add-on to treating the airway problem, not a replacement for it
  • Shift work disorder

Neither label lists ADHD, fatigue from other illnesses, studying or general focus as approved uses. If you see those claims on a vendor page, they're off-label at best. Neither label covers children either.

Doses and tablet sizes

This is where the two really part ways.

Provigil (modafinil)Nuvigil (armodafinil)
Tablet strengths100 mg, 200 mg50 mg, 150 mg, 200 mg, 250 mg
Narcolepsy / OSA200 mg once in the morning150 mg to 250 mg once in the morning
Shift work disorder200 mg about 1 hour before the shift150 mg about 1 hour before the shift
Higher dosesUp to 400 mg tolerated, no consistent extra benefitUp to 250 mg in OSA, no consistent extra benefit over 150 mg

So 150 mg of Nuvigil is roughly the counterpart of 200 mg of Provigil. If you compare tablets by milligram alone, you'll get the wrong idea about which one is "stronger."

Both labels also say patients with severe liver problems should get a reduced dose, and older patients may need a lower one. That's a decision for your prescriber.

How long each one lasts

Both labels give an elimination half-life of about 15 hours. For modafinil, that figure is after repeated doses; the S form inside it clears much faster than the R form, so the mixture as a whole tapers differently from pure armodafinil.

Armodafinil reaches its peak level in the blood about 2 hours after a dose on an empty stomach. Food can push that back by 2 to 4 hours. Modafinil peaks within 2 to 4 hours.

What does that mean in practice? Some people on Nuvigil report that the effect lasts further into the evening. For a night-shift worker that can be useful. For someone who wants to sleep at 10 PM, it can be a problem. This is one of the few real, practical reasons a doctor might pick one over the other.

Side effects compared

The labels list a similar set of side effects, which makes sense given they're the same drug family.

Common on both:

  • Headache (the most common on both labels)
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Anxiety

Rare but serious warnings, also on both:

  • Serious skin rashes, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Stop and get medical help at the first sign of a rash unless your doctor says it's unrelated.
  • Allergic reactions, including swelling of the face, lips or throat.
  • Psychiatric symptoms, such as anxiety, mania, hallucinations or suicidal thoughts.
  • Heart symptoms, such as chest pain. Both labels advise caution in people with certain heart conditions.

Both labels also warn that the drug can make hormonal birth control less effective while you're taking it and for a month after stopping. If that applies to you, talk to your doctor about other methods.

Neither drug has a label claim of fewer side effects than the other. Some people tolerate one better than the other, but that's individual, and you'd only find out under medical supervision.

Which is better? A practical way to think about it

Since the labels list the same uses, "better" really means "better for your situation." Here's how the trade-offs usually look.

Provigil (or generic modafinil) may suit you if:

  • You want the longer track record. Modafinil was approved in the US in 1998, and there's more published experience with it.
  • You find a long-lasting effect gets in the way of sleep.
  • Your insurer covers generic modafinil more cheaply on your plan.

Nuvigil (or generic armodafinil) may suit you if:

  • You work long or late shifts and need the effect to hold.
  • Your doctor wants the finer dose steps the 50 mg tablet allows.
  • Your plan covers generic armodafinil more cheaply.

Things that don't decide it:

  • Which one a forum calls "cleaner." These are personal reports, not evidence.
  • Which one is "stronger" by the milligram. The doses are different on purpose.

Brand vs generic, and the online versions

In the US, both brands have FDA-approved generics. An approved generic has to deliver the same active ingredient at the same rate and extent as the brand. That's what most US pharmacies dispense.

Online sellers such as Afinil sell Indian generics instead. On October 22, 2026, Afinil listed "Generic Nuvigil 150 mg" made by HAB Pharma and "Generic Provigil 200 mg," also made by HAB Pharma. These are made for export and aren't FDA-approved, so we can't confirm they match the US standard. We haven't lab-tested them.

One more correction: Afinil's generic Nuvigil page uses the phrase "OTC" in a heading. Armodafinil isn't an over-the-counter drug in the US. It needs a prescription.

Price compared

At Afinil, HAB Pharma products sat in the lower price band. Both the generic Nuvigil 150 mg and the generic Provigil 200 mg were listed at these totals:

PackTotalPer tablet
10$29$2.99
30$79$2.59
100$169$1.69
500$499$0.99
1,000$899$0.89

Since a typical daily dose is one tablet of either, the daily cost works out about the same. For example, a 30-day supply at the 30-tablet price is $79, plus shipping if the order is under Afinil's $130 free-shipping threshold. That's an example based on listed prices; your real total depends on the pack and payment method. For a deeper cost comparison across brands, see Afinil's generic Nuvigil vs Waklert comparison.

In the US, a prescription filled at a pharmacy can cost very different amounts depending on your plan. Generic modafinil and generic armodafinil are often on formularies, sometimes with prior authorization. Ask your pharmacist to price both before you decide; the legal route can be cheaper than people expect.

The legal side

Both drugs are Schedule IV controlled substances in the US, which means a prescription is required, refills are limited, and US customs can seize parcels shipped in without one. If you'd like to get a prescription properly, our online doctor guide explains the options, and our legal notes cover the US rules.

Switching between them

People sometimes switch because the first one didn't suit them. If you're thinking about it:

  1. Raise it with your prescriber rather than swapping on your own.
  2. Never take both on the same day. They're the same drug family, and the effects add up.
  3. Expect a different dose number. A doctor won't simply give you "200 mg of armodafinil" because you were on 200 mg of modafinil.
  4. Keep a short note of how you feel on each, including sleep quality.

Questions to ask your doctor

  • Given my condition, is there a reason to prefer one?
  • How late in the day will it still be active for me?
  • What does my insurance cover, and is prior authorization needed?
  • What should I do if I get a rash or feel anxious?
  • Do I need a different birth control method while taking it?

Verdict

Nuvigil isn't simply a stronger Provigil, and Provigil isn't an outdated Nuvigil. They share approved uses, side effects and legal status. The real differences are dose sizes, how long the effect lasts and what each costs you. For most people, the better choice is whichever one their doctor prescribes at the price their plan makes cheapest. Please read our medical disclaimer: this page is information, not medical advice.

FAQ

Is Nuvigil stronger than Provigil?

Milligram for milligram, Nuvigil contains only the longer-acting half of the modafinil molecule, so its usual dose (150 mg) is lower than Provigil's (200 mg). That doesn't make it better; the labels list the same approved uses.

Do Nuvigil and Provigil treat the same conditions?

Yes. Both US labels list excessive sleepiness linked to narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea and shift work disorder in adults.

Which lasts longer, Nuvigil or Provigil?

Both labels give an elimination half-life of around 15 hours. Some people find Nuvigil's effect stretches later into the day, which can be good for long shifts and bad for sleep.

Can I switch from Provigil to Nuvigil?

Only with your prescriber's guidance. They are closely related, so you should never take them together, and your doctor will set the new dose.

Is generic Nuvigil the same as brand Nuvigil?

Generic armodafinil contains the same active ingredient. Approved US generics have to show bioequivalence. Export generics sold online, like HAB Pharma's, are not FDA-approved.

Which is cheaper?

In the US, both are available as generics, and the price depends on your plan. At Afinil on October 22, 2026, HAB Pharma's generic Nuvigil 150 mg and generic Provigil 200 mg were both listed from $29 for 10 tablets.

Do I need a prescription for either?

Yes. Both are Schedule IV controlled substances in the US, so you need a valid prescription from a licensed prescriber.

What are the common side effects?

Headache is the most common on both labels. Nausea, dizziness and trouble sleeping are also listed. Serious rash, allergic reactions and psychiatric symptoms are rare but need urgent care.
